It was a quiet window for Serie A, with Juventus spending big on young talent but parking it for the future; 15m euros Mattia Caldara, for example, is staying with his current club Atalanta on loan. With Barcelona typically quiet and Real Madrid barred from involvement it was similarly sedate in Spain. Villarreal's lucrative sale of Alexandre Pato to Tianjin Quanjian was comfortably the biggest transfer in La Liga, though Jese's loan move to his hometown club of Las Palmas was a romantic subplot on deadline day.

France was busier than usual this winter, with Julian Draxler and Goncalo Guedes both joining Paris St-Germain for big fees, Lyon splashing out on Memphis Depay and Marseille luring Dimitri Payet back. The Dimitri Payet deal looked like going to the wire but was done in time for him to make his second debut for the club on deadline night. On deadline day it was Lille, under new ownership, who were busiest, signing no less than six in a frenetic 24 hours, led by €8 million winger Anwar El Ghazi from Ajax.

Coventry, rock bottom of League One and heading for the fourth tier, have signed Watford forward Michael Folivi on loan. He must have been about 17th choice striker at Vicarage Road.

Germany doesn't really get the English spirit of deadline day, with the Bundesliga wrapping things up at a civilised hour as usual. Bayern Munich made a pair of big signings in Hoffenheim pair Niklas Sule and Sebastian Rudy, but they won't arrive until summer. Borussia Dortmund moved quickly to snap up Swedish wunderkind Alexander Isak and Bayer Leverkusen also spent big on a youngster on deadline day, paying €12 million for Jamaican teenager Leon Bailey from Genk.

Thank goodness, then, for Turkey's taste for the spectacular, with champions Besiktas and surprise title chasers Baskasehir both going for striking experience in Demba Ba and Emmanuel Adebayor respectively.

    Arsenal 1-2 Watford

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder on BBC Match of the Day

Arsenal played better in the second half but you can’t keep giving yourself a mountain to climb against such quality and expect to win games.

You are never going to win the league that way. Defensively, even though they brought in reinforcements I still don’t think they are anywhere near Chelsea.

  6. The magic of Milivojevic?published at 23:08 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    Luka Milivojevic - Crystal Palace

The signing of a defensive midfielder is generally unlikely to get the pulses racing in many fantasy football managers but Luka Milivojevic joins Crystal Palace having scored six times already for Olympiakos this season.

If he can carry that form into the Premier League, he’ll certainly be worth a look.

Adding some steel to a Palace defence which has managed only two clean sheets all season, Milivojevic’s biggest impact could be on the defence, improving the stock of the likes of Scott Dann who has, himself, notched three times this season.

Marc Wilson, who you would be forgiven for forgetting had joined Bournemouth last summer, has joined West Brom.

The former Stoke man can play in defence or midfield.

  8. Conte happy to sit tightpublished at 23:06 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    Chelsea

Ross Mooring, ChelseaFancast.com: "Just as Chelsea held firm at the top of the table tonight, there wasn't likely to be anything dramatic on the transfer front.

"Costa was always unlikely to leave this window with Chelsea having already recouped a generous £60m for Oscar at the start of the month - selling him in the summer will allow more expenditure under FFP rules if the Spain international insists on leaving.

"Conte has largely been content to sit tight with his title-leading squad, bar recalling Nathan Ake and letting long time club stalwarts John Mikel Obi and Branislav Ivanovic leave for first-team football.

"With the Russian transfer window open for another month, Ivanovic's departure may not be confirmed for a day or two yet, but the Serbian is returning east after nine very successful years with the club. And of course, January wouldn't be complete without a host of Chelsea youngsters departing on loan too."

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho is poised to join Crystal Palace on loan for the rest of the season. Palace will pay all of Sakho's wages as well as a £2m loan fee.

Sakho had been given a £20m price tag for a permanent move.

Swansea City and Southampton both also tried to do a deal but he is heading to Palace barring any late hitches.

  11. Is Gabbiadini a good move?published at 23:03 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    Manolo Gabbiadini - Southampton

Whether Saints’ new signing Manolo Gabbiadini makes it into many fantasy football teams this season will depend greatly on whether he is listed as a forward or a midfielder, being capable of playing in both positions.

Gabbiadini’s goal-scoring record, while not exactly prolific, is respectable for a midfielder.

However, with a forward line already littered with versatile players, his introduction creates new question marks over the starting security of several Southampton players, with perhaps early-season budget favourite Nathan Redmond most under threat.

  15. We would have liked more - Moyespublished at 22:57 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    Sunderland

Sunderland manager David Moyes on the lack of activity in the transfer market for his club: "We would have liked to have added more players if possible," he told BBC Radio 5 live.

"It has been well documented we were after some players but clubs have said no or the players have decided they do not want to come.

"It was not for the want of trying. We have got to get good togetherness and make ourselves tough to play against.

"Hopefully the team spirit can improve and we can build because we don't have the players we would like."

Chris Forryan from Leicester Till I Die

Well that was a damp squib of a transfer deadline day.

We are stuck with a player who said he would never play for us again (Ulloa) and we sign Molla Wague, a centre-back who has played just six league games this season.

It's like putting a plaster over a severed leg.

What's more worrying is the signings and improved form of our relegation rivals.

Ranieri I am afraid is living on borrowed time.

    DECLINED

    Bournemouth

Eddie Howe was asked if he tried to re-sign Nathan Ake: "We've had discussions with Chelsea. The bid that was reported in the media is miles off the mark, but we've inquired about the opportunity to bring him back here, either on loan or permanently, and it was declined."
