United look a threat in every attack. Jesse Lingard tries to curl a shot into the far side of the net but a deflection carries it away for a corner. Chris Smalling meets the resulting set-piece but heads wide.

Adam Clayton joins Phil Jones in the book for blocking the taking of a quick free-kick.

Boro respond with a well-worked opportunity. The ball is moved to the right and swung over for Alvaro Negredo to rise and nod back across goal but wide.

Steve Agnew was heading that along with his striker down on the touchline and is very frustrated to see it go wide.

United are looking the most likely to score now. They come forward again and have three on two but after Juan Mata finds Antonio Valencia out wide, his low cross is in to space and easy to clear.

Soon after, Valencia's cross is flicked on by Lingard in  the box but there is nobody there to finish. Are they going to rue all these missed chances?

Phil Jones is in the book. It is a cynical foul to run right across the advancing Negredo and block him. He shakes his head, but he can have no complaints.

Juan Mata's low cross looks certain to be converted by Marcus Rashford but his little touch is blocked by the Boro keeper, who then leaps to his feet and is well-placed to parry a low shot towards the bottom corner of the net from Lingard. 

Me thinks the Spaniard has a point to prove.

United win a corner, but Negredo does his job in the Boro box to hammer the delivery away. Chris Smalling took a tumble in the box as he was running with Bernardo, but he didn't make much of it afterwards.

United deal well with two Boro crosses, both designed for Alvaro Negredo but badly over-hit. Just small signs that this game could develop into a good one.

United burst into life. Marcus Rashford gets in behind the Boro defence again but his cut-back for Jesse Lingard is put behind by a home boot. From the resulting corner, Marouane Fellaini heads wide.

Peter Malath: I hate playing teams that have just sacked their manager. They play more than they usually do. I hate it, I have bad feelings.

Thariq: I can tell already Utd are going to struggle to make chances. They look so flat.

Last few minutes have been scrappy. Lots of launched balls, dealt with by the respective defences. The home fans feel Phil Jones may have been a bit too physical with Alvaro Negredo but the ref waves for play to continue.

Adam Rust: Fellaini MOTM vs Rostov. CBs have shown quality. Rashford in England squad. Lingard & Young chance to step up. Why so bad? 

Boro have been on top in these opening 15 minutes. United, though, have spurned the best chance.

Now it's David de Gea's turn to pull out a top drawer save. Gaston Ramirez cuts inside and fires an angled shot that is destined for the net until United's keeper flings himself to his left to turn the ball away.

Fabio tries to release Ramirez in the box but he puts way too much on his pass and it flies out of play for a goal-kick. It draws appreciative applause from the home crowd, though. These Boro fans have been starved of entertainment so far this season.

Playing some nice stuff, Boro. They move the ball neatly in midfield but a United defender sticks a boot out to prevent them progressing any further.
