Well, what a night. Leicester City are England's only representatives in the Champions League last eight as Manchester City head home, wondering what might have been.

At least I didn't have to eat my hat.

Looking at the game management, Pep may feel let down by his players. They didn't have the footballing IQ to know they had to play some long balls in, to recognise the scenario of the game. It took Pep to tell them at half-time. That is basic football.

It wasn't that long ago that Leicester City fans were awaiting the draw for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy quarter-finals but on Friday they could be paired with Barcelona, Bayern Munich or one of the other European giants in the last eight of the Champions League. Amazing.

There was a lack of leadership on the pitch and a lack of bravery. Take John Stones out of that, who was excellent tonight.

There was too many players who underachieved and didn't take responsibility.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, talking to BT Sport: "We played exceptional second half but we forgot to do that in the first. We wanted to defend aggressively. We were better in the second but it wasn't enough.

"Normally we play to a good level but here we didn't. We will learn. The team does not have a lot of experience. 

"The second half we had the chances and we didn't take them and that is why we are out. And set-pieces are so important at this level. Barcelona and Real Madrid scored from them last week. We were not there and we were not there in the first 45 minutes.

"We will improve but this competition is so demanding. Sometimes we have to be special and be lucky. We were not."

I was anticipating a snarling Pep Guardiola in the post-match television interview but he was actually quite calm.

Between 2006 and 2011 there were 16.

You look at players like Yaya - he is a big man, he is composed on the ball. They didn't have any of that and Monaco kept turning the ball over.

Manchester City defender John Stones: "Very sloppy. Not up to our standard in the first half. We wanted to correct that but we weren't clinical enough in both boxes. We didn't score enough and weren't defensively solid enough. 

"The second half didn't reflect the whole scoreline. We were the City people know from this season. We should have scored more. It is a difficult one for us to take. We should have done better and deserve to be in the next round.

"The gaffer was saying before that the more and more he plays the Champions League it is about the set-pieces. Real Madrid scored from two last week and went through. We weren't solid enough."

Just watching Manchester City's defending for the free-kick that led to Monaco's decisive goal and it's truly woeful stuff. I'd be fuming if I saw that in League Two - high line, no-one picking up runners, no-one commanding the box. 

Pep Guardiola's reaction was to whack the top of the dugout before stamping his feet. He was fuming.

I am not so sure the signings over the last five years have been that good. But when Sane scores I think Pep is thinking ‘this is perfect, we can control the game from here’. Then they concede.

Pep Guardiola doesn’t go out there and spend the bulk of his money on defenders. He will be thinking if they had put one of those chances away they would be in the next round.

I thought De Bruyne, Silva, Fernandinho didn't take responsibility on the ball. They looked shell-shocked at the start by Monaco. From the first kick of the second half they went long and the gaps appeared. They needed to realise that sooner. In the first leg, Yaya Toure did that. It happened too late here.

Pep Guardiola is used to setting impressive records but this is a record he'll want to forget: 

Manchester City are the first team in Champions League history to be eliminated in a knockout tie after scoring five goals in the first leg.

Towards the end of the game, with City needing a goal, Neville said he would put his life on their being another goal. It didn't come.

Neville: “I thought there would be another twist and City would get the goal to take them through.”

I think it is a missed opportunity. The first half performance was sloppy. They started casually. You have to give credit to Monaco. They looked more inspired by the occasion. City's players didn't look inspired. That youth of Monaco, they were fearless.

It is the defence that has cost City, though. It wasn't good enough.

David Berwick: It was a game of two halves we got back into the game then we didn't have the intelligence to see it out.  

Al Mamun Russell: City fired Pellegrini though he won the league and league cup in two seasons. His replacement Pep might not win anything.

"They have been two brilliant football matches. City lost it in the first half when they were outplayed, outfought and were bullied. 

They got back into the game and they thought they were through. But their Achilles heel was a sloppy goal. 

Another year has failed to live up to expectations.
