There are still 19 minutes (plus stoppage, but ref Sanchez Martinez will be a cruel so and so if he plays any) remaining.

    10-1?

No they aren't odds of a draw.

    Sensational. Truly sensational.

Neymar, with Lionel Messi off the pitch, gets the chance to apply some Brazilian gloss.

He curls his free-kick over the wall - the ball starts out right then bends inside the keeper's near post, top left.

    An absolute peach.

He does a little dance afterwards. Lovely.

  5. Factoids of the match so farpublished at 64 mins

    Barcelona 4-1 Sporting Gijon

There's me thinking there would be a lull in this match to enable me to type these out...

    • Javier Mascherano made his first assist for Barcelona in La Liga (187 appearances)
    • Luis Suarez has scored seven goals in his four La Liga games against Sporting Gijon
    • Lionel Messi is the only player to score with his right foot, left, head & from the penalty spot & a direct free-kick during this league campaign
    • Paco Alcacer has scored two goals in his last two games, more than he did in his previous 14 for Barcelona
  6. Messi is offpublished at 61 mins

    Injured? No.

Just a rest. His job is done here.

    Andre Gomes comes on.

They're still laughing over that free-kick a few moments ago. Not sure what was funny about it, in all honesty.

  7. CLOSE!published at 59 mins

    Barcelona 4-1 Sporting Gijon

    Lionel Messi steps up.

    It's over the wall.

    It's dipping.

    It dips.

But on to the top netting.

    Close.

  8. Postpublished at 58 mins

    Barcelona 4-1 Sporting Gijon

Denis Suarez is upended just outside the box.

Good news: It's not a pen.

Bad news: Messi's going to take the free-kick.

  9. YELLOW CARD OF THE NIGHTpublished at 55 mins

    Barcelona 4-1 Sporting Gijon

Sporting's Juan Rodriguez gets his sickle and scythes down Neymar, who finds himself launched into the air before landing with a thud.

    Lionel Messi pickpockets Babin.

Lays the ball to sub Paco Alcacer.

    Alcacer drills in.

    This is a Sporting shambles.

    Not like Lionel, that.

The Argentine dawdles on the ball in the area after Neymar pulls the ball back for the wee forward, allowing Sporting to clear.

Best wishes to Villarreal keeper Asenjo.

He produced an extraordinary save to keep out Karim Benzema's header on Sunday in the game against Real Madrid. In doing so he picked up an injury, which happened to be his anterior cruciate - the fourth time he has suffered the problem.

  17. Now then...published at 43 mins

    Barcelona 3-1 Sporting Gijon

Burgui is causing a few problems for Barca down the left.

He jinks and pushes and jinks before striking a shot inside the area which Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen claws away from goal.

The loose ball almost falls into the path of Carlos Castro but Barca's Jordi Alba clears.

At the other end Neymar runs, runs and runs - it could be goal of the season - but his sidefoot shot is saved by Ivan Cuellar.

Great contest here, not one for fans of defensive play.

Neymar, Suarez and Messi are doing that annoying thing when they produce dummies, neat flicks, great interplay etc in and around the penalty area.

    Frustrating isn't it Sporting?

This time Messi's dummy intended to play in Suarez is cleared.

Luis Suarez produces another jack-in-the-box effort but this time his low snap-shot is well held by Sporting keeper Ivan Cuellar.

    Easy save to be fair.

    Six mins before HT.

  20. Bravepublished at 37 mins

    Barcelona 3-1 Sporting Gijon

This time Sporting clear the set-piece.

I know no two halves the same, but you'd have to be a very brave person - the bravest - to back Sporting to get something out of this match.

    Super brave.
