Wales have been under the cosh but perhaps the counter attack is their friend? Chris Gunter's cross is a cracker, Neil Taylor and Aaron Ramsey both miscontrol it and sub Sam Vokes slides a shot wide on the spin.

Since Glenn Whelan cut his head open the Republic of Ireland have been on top. Another free-kick in a dangerous area - again James McClean skids a shot into the wall.

I think Richard Keogh can be braver there. It's a great ball in from Glenn Whelan. Go and head it, don't wait for it.

Glenn Whelan is back on with a massive comedy bandage across his head. Like a Scooby Doo villain. Shane Long nods on a clearance and Ashley Williams does well to dispossess Jon Walters. That's got the crowd going - and Richard Keogh flicks the corner wide!

James McClean sizes up the free-kick, Ronaldo style, as he hits one from a good 30 yards out. Into the wall, and an offside flag for the follow up.

Martin O'Neill is on the sidelines barking out orders as Aaron Ramsey scuffs a low shot comfortably at Darren Randolph.

Ireland have not got going at all in this second half as Glenn Whelan is down and bleeding after a clash with Aaron Ramsey. Whelan ducked into the challenge and took a boot to the face.

All Wales now. Neil Taylor mistimes his jump and duffs a header wide when well placed bang in front of the posts. A lone trumpeter, or some sort of horn, breaks into a freeform jazz version of 'Those were the days my friend...'

It's the late shift on to his left foot which is impressive from Gareth Bale there. Darren Randolph was beaten - there was great pace on that strike.

England had a flurry of late half chances but just like the big boys, they come up short in Germany.

  11. CLOSE!published at 49 mins

Shoot on sight stuff at the start of this second half. Gareth Bale doesn't have an option in front of him so he just shoots, from about 35 yards, and sends it flying just past the far post!

All sorts of movement on that ball...

Hit it! Neil Taylor heads the ball down into the run of Aaron Ramsey, he should really hit it first time but takes a touch and the moment has gone.

Seconds later we have our first shot on target as Gareth Bale skids a shot into the hands of Darren Randolph.

Here we go then, more quality needed in the second half if it's going to end up anything other than 0-0.

Sam Vokes is on for Hal Robson-Kanu.

From the Republic of Ireland's point of view it's been quite comfortable. Both sides have lacked quality - it's waiting for an injection in the game.

Martin O'Neill will be delighted with how Gareth Bale has played because he's been quite poor.

There's been lots of niggly fouls. Wales are the team that have tried to put more pressure on the Irish goal. Ireland have contested very well.

It's not been a great first half - its been more tactical. I'd put another player up top for Wales.
