Sunderland boss David Moyes still believes he can keep Sunderland up

    Ahh, Moysie. Ever the optimist.

The Sunderland boss believes he can keep Sunderland in the Premier League despite suffering a fourth defeat in five games on Saturday when they lost 1-0 at Watford.

The Black Cats are seven points adrift of safety.

"Of course we can," said Moyes. "Until it is mathematically not possible we will keep trying to win games and get the points we need."

    Coventry v Oxford (14:30 BST)

It's fair to say that there was a 'mixed' reception to the EFL Trophy from supporters in earlier rounds this season following the introduction of Premier League and Championship under-21 teams.

But the crowd for the final is expected to push 70,000 today. Proof if ever that everyone loves a 'big day out.'

"Once you get out of those group stages, it does become a realistic chance for any side to get themselves to Wembley," Oxford boss Michael Appleton said.

"That's what I think makes the competition. A lot of people frowned upon it at the start, but they wouldn't frown upon it if they got through to the quarters or semi-finals and then be good enough to get to the final.

"You've only got to look at the attendance for the final, which is going to be over 70,000, which I think will be a record for Wembley.

"The fact that you can attract that type of crowd, just shows the size of the two clubs that are going to be competing against each other."

  9. 'Take the power away from Wenger'published at 12:59 British Summer Time 2 April 2017

Arsenal v Manchester City (16:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
    Ex-Chelsea striker on MOTD2 Extra

The fact Arsene Wenger is in control of his own destiny at Arsenal is wrong. It should be solely up to the owner.

This whole situation is only going to be cleared up when the owner is strong enough and takes the power away from Wenger.

Alexis Sanchez is fit, but a thigh injury has sidelined Lucas Perez, while Santi Cazorla's Achilles injury has  ruled him out, external  until next season.

Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling are both in contention for Manchester City despite picking up injuries while on international duty.

I think there is more scrutiny over Ross Barkley than there should be.

If you compare him to other England players of around his age - Dele Alli, Eric Dyer etc, he hasn't got the support around him that those other players have in other teams.

The fans are incredibly harsh on him and expect so much which I think is very unfair. I'm not sure a change of clubs would be the best for him at this stage of his career.

He does not perform to the level he can and he isn't fulfilling his potential at the moment.

  15. Can't defend v can't scorepublished at 12:51 British Summer Time 2 April 2017

    Swansea v Middlesbrough (13:30 BST)

    Alistair Mann
    MOTD commentator

After seemingly starting to pull clear of trouble, two successive defeats to sides in a similar plight have drawn Swansea back into the dogfight once again. They can ill afford a third.

That said, the situation of their weekend visitors is even more desperate - a fourth defeat in a row might cause Middlesbrough to be cast adrift of the safety line.

The last time Boro registered three points was before Christmas, when they recorded their biggest victory of the campaign, with the Swans their beleaguered opponents.

As then, Swansea's Achilles heel remains their defensive frailties. Middlesbrough's has been in attack, and with both acutely aware of the damaging effect of a defeat it's all set to be a frantic tussle.

  16. 'Bilic criticism unfair'published at 12:48 British Summer Time 2 April 2017

    Hull 2-1 West Ham

    Alan Shearer
    Ex-England striker on BBC One

This was always going to be a tough season for West Ham. They've suffered with injuries, lost their best player in Dimitri Payet, they're at a new stadium.

They're 14th, three points off ninth - I think criticising Slaven Bilic is unfair. I think they need to come out and back him.

  19. The dreaded vote of confidencepublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 2 April 2017

    West Ham United

Some big news, which is not news, but West Ham have given Slaven Bilic some backing.

To end speculation once and for all, the West Ham United Board feel it necessary to announce that we have 100 per cent faith in Slaven Bilic's ability to lead West Ham United.

Despite press speculation to the contrary, the manager's position is not under threat. The Board know that Slaven and his coaching staff have the full backing of the playing squad and the overwhelming majority of supporters to lead West Ham United out of this difficult spell.
