  18. Everton 'have listened to the people'published at 13:23 British Summer Time 15 April 2017

    Everton v Burnley (15:00 BST)

    Joe AndersonImage source, Getty Images

Mayor Joe Anderson says he is "delighted" that Everton have banned the Sun from the club:

"We at Everton have always been proud of the fact that we have supported Liverpool FC and their fans through this," he told BBC Sport.

"Everton prides itself on being called the people's club, they have listened to the people and I am delighted with how they have reacted.

"All credit to Bill Kenwright, he spoke to me this morning and understood that people had strong feelings on it."

The ban is justified. Liverpool in general has had a long-term problem with the Sun, and this column just antagonises the situation further.

Today's is Everton's first game since the Sun published Kelvin McKenzie's column that compared midfielder Ross Barkley to a gorilla and ridiculed the wages earned by the citizens of Liverpool.

The newspaper will not be reporting on it.

Everton have banned it from Goodison Park, the Finch Farm training base and "all areas of the club's operation."

"Whilst we will not dignify any journalist with a response to appalling and indefensible allegations, the newspaper has to know that any attack on this City, either against a much respected community or individual, is not acceptable," Everton said in a club statement.

Mayor Joe Anderson had called on the club's fans to protest against the paper by turning their backs from the pitch at 15:06 BST.
