Thanks for your company this evening, as Manchester City moved one step closer to emulating Arsenal Ladies' historic 2007 triumph of winning the European Cup.

No British side has managed to reach even the final since then. Could this be the year?

Here's a possible omen for Man City fans to ponder... There are no German sides in the last four this season. When was the last time that happened, you ask? 2007, when a British side became European champions.

The holders Lyon stand in City's way first though, and they are a seriously good side. Join us again for that tie - it should be a cracker.

Quite a box-office line-up, that.

So then, that win for Man City means that, in April, they will face holders Lyon in the semi-finals.

That means we're set to see a showdown between City's Wolrd Player of the Year Carli Lloyd and Lyon's United States forward Alex Morgan - who joined the defending champions on loan for six months from Orlando Pride this winter.

That individual match-up will attract a wide-reaching, global audience.

Morgan, for example, boasts more than 3m followers on a popular social media site, and was reportedly the highest-paid women's footballer in the world in 2015.

City's progression in Europe sees them reach a second knockout-competition semi-final in less than a week, following Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final win at Bristol City.

They remain on course for a possible five trophies in the space of nine months, with the WSL 1 Spring Series still to come, following their League and League Cup double in 2016.

It won't go down in history as one of the greatest games in Women's Champions League history, but Man City's formidable organisation never really let Fortuna Hjorring make much of a game of that second leg.

Lucy Bronze's first-half, looping header was enough to win the game on the night, after Carli Lloyd's priceless away goal in the first leg set them on their way.

"It's been a very professional performance from Manchester City. They were very nervous for the first 20 minutes and gave away chances to Fortuna, which I'm sure Fortuna will be disappointed they didn't take. 

"But City have done the ultimate job tonight by securing a spot in the semi finals of the competition."

Karen Bardsley - who hasn't had much to do tonight - comes out quickly to claim a high ball launched forward into the City box by Fortuna. Smart keeping.

Apart from two chances mid-way through the first half, the Danish side have never really looked like scoring.

Two late goals now would be extremely out of the blue. City are almost there.

Less than two minutes of normal time plus stoppage time stand in between Man City and the semi-finals of the Women's Champions League.

The last time a British side got that far was three years ago, when Birmingham City reached the last four.

The hosts launch the ball into the box, looking to extend their lead, but Steph Houghton's shot is blocked.

Time is running out for the visitors though, very quickly.

Man City break down the right and Nikita Parris is clipped down. From the resulting free-kick, Carli Lloyd almost heads in to make it 3-0 on aggregate but her flicked header from a bouncing ball is well saved by Maria Christensen.

Man City's holding midfielder Keira Walsh is having another very solid game, having starred for the league champions last season.

The 19-year-old plays with an intelligence far beyond her years, intercepting here, breaking up play there, laying the ball off and setting up moves.

Uncapped at senior level, her displays are surely giving England boss Mark Sampson something to think about as he prepares to name his squad for the Euros.

The hosts think Jane Ross is through with a big chance for the second goal, but she is just offside after a fine burst forward from Lucy Bronze.

But Mel Lawley's attempt at a low delivery into the box is well dealt with by the Fortuna defence.

Nick Cushing's side are so well-organised defensively - led by England skipper Steph Houghton - that you can only really see them conceding if they make an individual error.

You could probably count on one hand the number of times they have been genuinely cut apart at the back in the past nine months or so.

At the other end, Mel Lawley's long-range shot is saved by Maria Christensen.

"She's a really nice girl, a hard worker. She'll be disappointed she didn't start tonight but I hope she really comes on and progresses in the future."

The visitors, two goals down on aggregate, make their third and final change, as Laura Frank is replaced forward Signe Bruun.
