There is nothing of note happening here. You might have noticed seeing as I'm speculating about whether the Dalglishes take sugary sweets to football matches.  

Kenny Dalglish is in the house. But the Reds great is more interested in seeing what wife Marina is rummaging for in her bag than what is happening on the pitch. I'm not surprised. I hope she pulls out a bag of wine gums.

Liverpool are in! Oh no they're not. Nathaniel Clyne fouled Ryan Bertrand before skipping around him from the right flank and into the box.

At least that was something positive, it was a shot on goal. It was a long way out but we've seen him do them before. He's capable of whipping his foot right around it.

It's a tactical game. Liverpool have got to patient and get the ball in behind. It's the only way they are going to succeed, unless they come up with something special. 

And talking of Coutinho... he is responsible for sticking the game's first shot on target.

The Liverpool playmaker finds a pocket of space about 25 yards out, looks up and drills low straight at Fraser Forster. Better than nothing.

Phil Coutinho looks to have shaken that dead leg off. He only lasted 13 minutes on Monday night, but he is busily trying to make something happen for the Reds. So far that's nothing, however.

Anfield had gone pretty quiet (maybe the home fans were concentrating on slapping on some sunscreen), before they find their voice to rally Jurgen Klopp's troops.

Plenty of possession for the Reds but it is all 30-yards plus from the Saints goal, with the away side packing men behind the ball.

I've seen more quality in a counterfeit clothes warehouse. This is not the real deal. Another Liverpool attack breaks down when a stray forward pass goes nearer the corner flag than a red shirt.

And that my friends is a shot. Hurrah.

Not there! Oriol Romeu dilly-dallies on the edge of his own area, allowing Roberto Firmino to sneak in and pick his pocket. The Liverpool forward has a blast from 25 yards...straight into Maya Yoshida's midriff.

And I don't think this one does either. James Milner cuts back on to his right foot, dinking in a hanging cross from the left flank. Gini Wijnaldum leaps highest, only for his header to loop into the air and allow Fraser Forster to gather easily.

Twelve minutes in and we are yet to see a shot on either goal. Told you it was quiet. And no, that Emre Can pass does not count.

Ouch! Nathaniel Clyne is wincing. The Liverpool right-back feels Ryan Bertrand's studs scraping down his ankle when  the Saints man accidentally catches him on the follow through after hacking clear.

A generous rub of the magic sponge sorts Clyne out.

Emre Can pings a diagonal ball inches over the Southampton stanchion from about 45 yards.

No, it is not what you're thinking. He hasn't gone for the Hollywood shot after his spectacular strike the other day. 

It was an intended pass to Nathaniel Clyne but the German balloons it.

It's scrappy at the moment. Southampton aren't making it easy for Liverpool when they cross the half-way line, but Liverpool are doing the same. It's like a game of chess.

All very patient so far. 

Southampton ask a few questions of the Liverpool defence for the first time today. Dusan Tadic puts on his dancing shoes, twisting and turning more than Chubby Checker on the right flank.

But that doesn't fool James Milner. The wily Liverpool skipper keeps his eyes on the ball, not the man, and dispossesses the Saints winger.

I scored a few overhead kicks in training but that was spectacular from Can. Everything about it from the pass to the finish.

I'm pleased for Can. He's come for criticism but I've always stuck by him. He's got a lot to offer. I hope he can earn a new contract. 

Liverpool's last match was a stinker. But they nabbed the win against Watford thanks to one of the goals of the season from Emre Can. We'd take another of those today. No sign yet, however.
