Bristol City started the season with a 3-1 home win over Barnsley, after taking a 3-0 lead in the opening 30 minutes.

Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Sheffield: "The first goal was a turning point.

"We know how hard we have got to work to put it right. We know where we are.

"The mindset has got to change because we saw how tough this league was last season, even when we were flying."

Last season's beaten play-off finalists Reading started the Championship campaign with a 2-0 defeat at QPR.

Reading boss Jaap Stam told BBC Radio Berkshire: "I only named six players on the bench because of how long our injury list is. It's not going well at the moment.

"We knew QPR would press us and they did it very, very well. They deserved the win.

"As a team we did not to well enough and we have got to do better."

It's open now and will end at 18:45 BST and we will announce the results in this live text commentary shortly afterwards.

  6. HALF-TIMEpublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 5 August 2017

    Aston Villa 1-0 Hull City

Andy Madley blows his whistle and that is that for the first half at Villa Park.

The hosts have had the bulk of the chances, but Hull have started to come back into it towards the break.

Gabby Agbonlahor's early strike still separates the two sides.

More encouragement for Hull again in attack as we approach the break.

Glenn Whelan gives the ball away to Kamil Grosicki and Fraizer Campbell has a low shot saved by Sam Johnstone as he runs into the area at pace.

John Terry was a few yards further behind chasing back...

    Aston Villa 1-0 Hull City

Almost a Hull equaliser out of nothing as Abel Hernandez shoots on the turn from the edge of the box from Kamil Grosicki's nod down.

His left-foot half-volley flashes past the post much to Sam Johnstone's relief.

Just noticed that new Hull City centre-back Temitayo Olufisayo Olaoluwa Aina has a rather impressive full name.

He also has impressive timing for a crucial challenge as he slides in to prevent Gabby Agbonlahor having a shooting chance to double Villa's lead.

  11. Blues need more options - Redknapppublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 5 August 2017

    FT: Ipswich 1-0 Birmingham City

    Joe GarnerImage source, Rex Features

Joe Garner's debut goal gave Ipswich Town a 1-0 win over Birmingham City.

Birmingham City boss Harry Redknapp told BBC WM: "At 0-0 I could not see us getting beat today. I thought if anyone was going to win it was going to be us.

"The players gave everything as I knew they would but we are in a situation where we are short. I looked at the bench and I had no change. I need options.

"We have tried very hard but everyone we have tried for it has not happened for whatever reason. People have asked for too much money.

"If I can get the players then I believe I can build a team that will challenge for promotion but it's a weak squad at the moment."

    Aston Villa 1-0 Hull City

Another hopeful ball punted forward by Hull to the edge of the Villa area but Sam Johnstone can easily collect that in the home side's goal.

Not been a lot for the Hull front pair of Abel Hernandez and Fraizer Campbell to feed on so far.

  13. Postpublished at 35 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Hull City

Ten minutes to the break and it's all Villa still.

Ahmed Elmohamady and Neil Taylor both finding space to push forward and put balls into danger areas.

Bit of tough baptism to Championship football this for new Hull boss Leonid Slutsky.

  14. Postpublished at 32 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Hull City

And that is almost Villa's second goal right on cue.

Ahmed Elmohamady floats a ball into the Hull area from the right and Scott Hogan stretches to poke it home.

He can't quite direct it on target and Allan McGregor also does enough to deflect it behind for a corner.

Half an hour gone. One goal to speak of, but still plenty of other chances.

Villa have certainly had the better of things and Hull have looked sluggish.

You feel there could be a couple more to come for the hosts.

The last time these two sides met in a competitive fixture, Villa boss Steve Bruce found himself in the opposite dugout.

The Tigers picked up a 2-0 victory on home soil in the Premier League meeting back in February 2015, a win which ended a run of 11 games in all competitions without a victory against the Villans.

There won't be too many survivors from that fixture in the two starting line-ups today, aside from Hull captain Michael Dawson and Villa full-back Alan Hutton.

Scott Hogan goes on a mazy run into the Hull area after Michael Dawson sloppily gives the ball away to Henri Lansbury 40 yards out.

Lansbury feeds the former Brentford striker who twists and turns away form challenges, but Allan McGregor is there yet again to block the shot.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Hull City

First real bit of creativity from Hull as they carve out a shooting chance.

Debutant Kamil Grosicki tries to curl one from the edge of the box, but it's an easy grab for Sam Johnstone in the Villa goal.

Another Villa man gets a yellow card meanwhile as Glenn Whelan is booked for a late tackle on Sam Clucas earlier in the move.
