Relegated Premeir League side Middlesbrough fell to a 1-0 defeat at Wolves after Leo Bonatini's debut goal.

Middlesbrough manager Garry Monk told BBC Tees: "The season opener is always difficult.

"We made too many simple mistakes in the first half and one of those led to a goal.

"In the second half we were the better team. We upped our urgency, especially in the last 25 minutes and we had the best chances in the game.

"We don't feel that we deserved to lose the game. We definitely deserved something from it."

    This was a nice touch.

After scoring, Gabby Agbonlahor held aloft a shirt in support of Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who was diagnosed with leukemia during the summer.

First man in referee Andy Madley's book in this one is Villa midfielder Henri Lansbury.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Hull City

Aston Villa with a corner from Neil Taylor after Michael Hector nervously put a back pass behind.

Scott Hogan arrives at the back post on the half-volley but doesn't really connect with enough power to trouble Allan McGregor.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Hull City

Hull register a response of sorts as they find themselves inside Villa's area for the first time.

It's a tame header though from Jarrod Bowen as Sam Johnstone has plenty of time to gather it.

    Gabby Agbonlahor

    And there it is!

Villa's early dominance is rewarded with a goal and Gabby Agbonlahor sweeps it home inside the Hull penalty area from Alan Hutton's low cross from the right.

Dream start for Steve Bruce's men.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Hull City

Villa in again down the left wing and this time Henri Lansbury turns provider for Gabby Agbonlahor.

The Villa striker is in one-on-one, but Allan McGregor stands firm and blocks his left-foot effort.

    Trouble for Hull early on.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Hull City

Early chance for Villa as Henri Lansbury finds himself inside the Hull area, but can't direct his left-foot half-volley on target from Neil Taylor's through ball.

It squirms tamely wide much to the relief of the Hull players.

Steve Bruce was a busy man yesterday on the last day before the start of term, getting another deal over the line just in time for this evening's opener against Hull.

Tottenham midfielder Josh Onomah joined on a season-long loan having been part of the World Cup-winning England under-20 side in June.

    He's named among Villa's substitutes.

The 20-year-old, who also put pen to paper on a new four-year contract at his parent club yesterday, could be in line for his Villa debut later.

Rather than who starts at Villa Park this evening, it's more a case of who misses out.

The hosts are without midfielder Jack Grealish (kidney), striker Jonathan Kodjia (ankle), midfielder Mile Jedinak (groin) and winger Albert Adomah (shin).

There's also a few injury headaches for new Tigers boss Leonid Slutsky with goalkeeper David Marshall, defender Moses Odubajo, midfielder Ryan Mason and striker Will Keane all out.
