  1. League One latestpublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

Rotherham may have had a losing mentality in the Championship last season but they're off to a flyer at home to Southend, with a Kieffer Moore double putting them in control.

There are three goals elsewhere in the third tier, the first of which was scored by Sean Longstaff to give Blackpool the lead at home to MK Dons.

Jack Marriott's low finish has Peterborough ahead at Bristol Rovers, while Alex Rodman has given Shrewsbury an early advantage at AFC Wimbledon.

  2. Forest holding their ownpublished at 15:19 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Brentford 0-0 Nottingham Forest

It's a tight affair at Brentford so far.

Mark Warburton's Nottingham Forest are holding their own against his former club, with Daryl Murphy poking just wide, and Tendayi Darikwa having a shot easily saved by Dan Bentley.

Brentford forward Lasse Vibe's effort is still the closest either side have come to a goal though.

    Reading 0-0 Fulham

Reading are taking advantage of their extra man.

Chris Gunter swings in a delicious cross with his left foot, but Joseph Mendes' effort is pushed onto the post by Fulham keeper David Button.

The visitors could be in for a long afternoon.

  5. Even start at Derbypublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Derby 0-0 Wolves

Let's check in on our other featured games in the Championship, after that incredible start at Reading.

At Derby, the hosts made a bright start, but Wolves are seeing a little bit more possession as they approach the 10-minute mark.

Meanwhile, Brentford and Nottingham Forest have both had chances at Griffin Park, Joe Worrall heading over for the visitors, before Lasse Vibe has a shot saved for the hosts.

  6. Postpublished at 15:09 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

Bristol City's early goal gave them a chance to use their fancy GIFs of players celebrating goals, which seem to have caught the imagination on social media.

    Reading 0-0 Fulham

Reading and Fulham have played against each other 18 times in regular season matches.

Or eighteen and a half if you count last season's fogged off encounter at the Madejski...

Reading v Fulham statsImage source, .

It will take a Herculean effort to pick up win number nine today with only 10 men on the field for more than 89 minutes of the 90.

Slavisa Jokanovic has responded to Tomas Kalas' dismissal by bringing off winger Neeskens Kebano for defender Denis Odoi.

FIRST GOAL OF THE DAY: Birmingham 0-1 Bristol Citypublished at 15:03 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Bobby Reid

    First goalImage source, Rex Features

In a rare turn of events, the afternoon's first red card has come before the first goal... but not by much.

Bobby Reid is in the right place at the right time to tap Championship leaders Bristol City into an early lead at Birmingham.

In League Two, Wycombe are next off the mark, going ahead against Port Vale thanks to 'The Beast' Adebayo Akinfenwa.

  9. RED CARD - Tomas Kalaspublished at 15:02 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Reading 0-0 Fulham

Incredible - just 30 seconds into their match at Reading, Fulham are down to 10 men.

Tomas Kalas is sent off for bringing down Modou Barrow, with the referee judging that the Czech defender was the last man.

    Fulham are furious.

  15. Play BBC Sport's Championship predictorpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

Have you tried BBC Sport's Championship predictor yet? So you might be a little late to the party, but each team still has 45 matches left to play so there's plenty of time for you to look like either a football expert in May or extremely foolish by mid-October.

BBC Sport's team of reporters had a go - only two of our predicted final top 10, Wolves and Leeds, won their opening fixture. Well done, us.

Surely you'll be able to do better? Have a go yourself and share the results with your friends.

  16. SAM's predictionspublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

SAM (Sports Analytics Machine) is a super-computer created by @ProfIanMcHale that is used to predict the outcome of football matches.

SAM will be predicting the results of every Championship fixture during the season, which you can find in our previews to each match.

Some eye-catching predictions for today - according to the computer, the likelihood of a Brentford win over Nottingham Forest is 54%, while it's a 51% chance for Fulham to win at Reading.

Don't go basing your weekend accumulators on this, though, and then blame us (or SAM) afterwards if it goes wrong.

  17. Is the Premier League becoming a "closed shop"?published at 14:45 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Moneyball

You've probably heard many people celebrate the return of football this weekend, with the Premier League season getting under way (I hope you told them the EFL started last week!).

But on a more serious note, the BBC has found a £100m gap opened up between Premier League and EFL clubs before a record TV rights deal even took effect.

The difference in average turnovers between the divisions is growing year by year, with one expert saying the Premier League is becoming a "closed shop" as successful clubs only become richer.

Cardiff City v Aston Villa (15:00 BST)

    Dafydd Pritchard
BBC Sport Wales at Cardiff City Stadium

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan is making a rare appearance at Cardiff City Stadium today.

The Malaysian businessman did not come to any games here last season but he will be in the stands to watch Neil Warnock's men take on John Terry and his Aston Villa team-mates this afternoon.

You'll be glad to know Tan has stuck with his trademark look of a Cardiff shirt worn over a suit shirt and tucked into his trousers.

Yeovil's 8-2 defeat by Luton was one of the stories of the opening week of the EFL - they impressed in a narrow cup loss at Wolves in midweek, but today's opponents Accrington have scored six goals in their opening two games this season. Can the Glovers keep them out?

Forest Green's visit to pre-season title favourites Mansfield sees two sides with sizeable budgets go head-to-head. The Stags have made 13 summer signings, while Rovers are being tipped for the play-offs despite only just getting promoted.

They were two leagues apart as recently as three months ago - now Blackburn and Doncaster play each other as equals as Ewood Park hosts its first third-tier game in a long time.

Is it too early to get excited about a meeting between second and third place? Definitely, but nevertheless Portsmouth's visit to Oxford pits together two teams with new managers and ambitions of continuing their rise through the EFL.

There's a Manchester derby to look forward to between Wigan and Bury tomorrow, but there's otherwise a full compliment of games this afternoon.
