Arsene Wenger is speaking in his press conference. I can now reveal that what I thought was deep V-neck sweater is actually a buttoned cardigan. And Wenger says:

"When you don't win games you should win, you can only look at yourself."

But then he goes off on a tangent about how his side are not awarded penalties compared to other teams in the league. Slight contradiction there.

    He also says:

"I expect to sell players first [before we buy]. We have too many and it is not manageable. We have 31, that's too many. But I am not after a game like that in transfer mode."

    And on Alexis Sanchez's fitness:

"If all goes well this week he will be available for selection next week."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on BT: "I believe some teams will get something here, that is why if you want to play at the top you have to consider it three points dropped.

"It was a very frustrating evening. I feel we had plenty of chances to score and didn't. We know in this kind of game it's important not to make a mistake but straight after half-time we were too sluggish on defending and we paid for it.

"After that we did not move the ball quickly enough and we did not combine well. On top of tha I think we scored a goal that is not offside. It's a very easy decision. When the ball is kicked he is not offside, Lacazette.

"I was not convinced by our central defence today."

  3. 'We got caught cold. There's no excuse'published at 19:50 British Summer Time 19 August 2017

    Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger speaking to BBC's Match of the Day: "It's a difficult defeat to swallow. We had chances - we should have won the game comfortably.

"We were unlucky. I think we scored a regular goal that was given offside and it wasn't offside.

"It was frustrating getting caught cold for the goal. Defensively there is no excuse. We gave them a cheap goal.

"It was difficult to get the fluency. We tried but we couldn't find the goal. There was lack of anticipation in the box with the second ball.

"To lose a game like that is disappointing You don't want to lose games that you should win."

Dane Skinner: Bellerin has lacked something since the new contract; give someone else a shot.

Shane Daly: Would Mesut Ozil get into any of the other top premier league teams? I highly doubt it.

Tracy Barber: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. Read it and weep, Arsene.

  5. 'Stoke fed up of criticism'published at 19:44 British Summer Time 19 August 2017

    Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

    Stoke City

More from Mark Hughes on Match of the Day: "I think they were ready for it today.

"We have been criticised a bit, some of it unfair. We'll take valid criticism but when we get things going, do things correctly then we'll always be a feature in this league.

"The crowd wanted to make a statement along with the team. They were fed up of criticism and they wanted it."

  6. Jese the 'game-changer'published at 19:42 British Summer Time 19 August 2017

    Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

    Stoke City

Stoke manager Mark Hughes speaking to Match of the Day: "That was a big result for us. A huge amount of work was put in by the guys and you have to do that against a quality side like Arsenal. They're intelligent, quick, strong. You have to dig in at times and that's what we did.

"We struggled to play the amount of football as we wanted to. That's a credit to Arsenal.

"Everyone knew what an acquisition Jese is. He's a game-changer. You have to say he put a shift in too.

"When you think about it, he only had two or three training sessions. If that's what's to come then we'll be delighted. He's an elite player and can carry the fight for you.

"The lads around him helped him through it. It's a great learning curve for him."

    Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

    Stoke City

Jese is asked by BT Sport, via a translator, if this was a dream debut: "Yes, yes. Coming here from Spain I realise the Premier League is tough and it's great to get the first win of the season.

"Nothing comes easy in football. Stoke are a historic club and I'm really looking forward to getting involved with the lads.

"It's a great opportunity for me. They've got a lot of great players."

Alex Maguire: Arsenal are the same as always, average at best. Why do the board keep faith in Wenger? It's been the same issues for years!!

Robin Best: Arsenal, to win games there is no point having all of the ball when you cannot score a goal, new season same rubbish.

Craig Smith: Sack Bould, buy a solid def-mid and get Sanchez back and we have chance. If not Arsenal can't expect top four.

    Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Spurs and England winger on 5 live Sport

I've got to say, that was a really determined and gritty performance from Stoke. It's not going to be remembered for how they played, but they got the job done.

Arsenal didn't threaten, lacked ideas and lacked creativity.

Stoke worked their socks off for that result.

BtheG: There you go again, different season the same old Arsenal.

Evan Pritchard: And it wasn't even raining.

Scott: I did say Jese would do Stoke good. Scored the winner, man of the match and a brilliant defensive performance from Stoke.

Jese's goal on his debut seals victory for Stoke. He trots off down the tunnel. Easy this Premier League lark, right?

There will be huge frustration for Arsenal. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain shakes his head as he follows into the dressing room.
