Barely 10 minutes ago, the home fans were sensing an upset. Now it feels as though the hope around these stands has all but evaporated.
We're either in for one of the greatest second-half comebacks the EFL Cup second round has ever seen, or West Ham are going to pick up their first win of the season.
Joe Allen (42 mins)
Routine stuff for Stoke tonight as Joe Allen gets his second and the Potters third just before half time.
It turns out XXXX* can do it on a dark Wednesday night in Stoke.

Newcastle 2-2 Nottm Forest
Conor McNamara

Rafael Benitez knows how to win trophies. He's won pretty much all of them but he's never quite had a challenge like Newcastle.
He must've thought after that early Mitrovic goal that a cup run was on the cards.
But no - it's never easy around here. Jason Cummings scored two for Forest - the second one a lovely finish.
A bad atmosphere on the brink of the interval at St James' Park - only for Aarons to score the goal of the game will a terrific drive from outside the box.

This is pretty comfortable for Stoke. Eight changes Mark Hughes made but with the experience of Allen, Crouch, Adam, Pieters and Bojan it was always going to be a difficult night for the League One side.
Josh Tymon's impressing with his energy and pace on the left hand side. He did well for Stoke pre-season after signing from Hull earlier this summer and he certainly doesn't look out of depth in this line-up tonight.
Blackburn 0-2 Burnley
Southampton 0-0 Wolves
Robbie Brady (45+4 mins)
It gets even better for Burnley as they grab a second before the break.
Robbie Brady, who has been excellent in this game, gets into the area before lashing high into the net.
Blackburn 0-1 Burnley
Ian Brown
BBC football commentator at Ewood Park
No more fans on the pitch at Ewood Park, thankfully.
But there is one new face in new Burnley signing Chris Wood, on to replace Jon Walters, who took that knock on his ankle early on.
Blackburn 0-1 Burnley
Some antics from a little earlier at Blackburn as a fan decided to leg it on the pitch. He was quickly tackled by Ashley Westwood.
Newcastle 2-2 Nottm Forest
Huddersfield 0-1 Rotherham
Cheltenham 0-2 West Ham
Rolando Aarons (45+1 mins)
What a goal!
Newcastle have offered very little since falling behind but Rolando Aarons pulls his side level with a delightful strike from outside the box.

Rafa Benitez know how to win a trophy.... he's already won the Champions League, the Europa League, the UEFA Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the Coppa Italia, the Supercoppa Italiana and La Liga.
But even he cannot believe how Newcastle have thrown away their early lead here and now trail Nottingham Forest 2-1.
Newcastle's last major domestic silverware was The 1955 FA Cup.
Cheltenham 0-2 West Ham
Steve Claridge
Ex-Leicester striker, BBC Radio 5 live at LCI Rail Stadium
It almost looked like Ayew was putting it back across goal for Sakho but in the end it's a lovely finish - similar to the first goal as it had no real pace but all the accuracy.
West Ham are just playing in between the lines and finding ways to carve Cheltenham open.
Peter Crouch (29 mins)
And another Premier League side in control of their tie is Stoke as Peter Crouch doubles his side's lead, firing in from Joe Allen's cutback.
Cheltenham 0-2 West Ham

Well that's certainly changed the mood here. West Ham score twice from their first significant spell of sustained pressure.
Cheltenham had certainly impressed in the first 35 minutes, but they face a really tough task now.
The home fans chuckle as the travelling Hammers quickly sing "We're going to Wember-lee."
Andre Ayew (42 mins)
Two goals in quick succession and West Ham are in control of this tie, Andre Ayew taking advantage of some poor goalkeeping to slot home.
Huddersfield 0-1 Rotherham
Huddersfield are pushing and pushing trying to find an equaliser but they still haven't given Richard O'Donnell in the Rotherham goal much to worry about.
