  1. goal

GOAL - Crystal Palace 1-1 Blackburnpublished at 42 mins

    Stuart Ripley (42 mins)

Back to basics for Blackburn! Alan Shearer comes out wide to cross from the right, Mike Newell helps it back and nobody has tracked debutant Stuart Ripley, who heads home the leveller.

That's £1.3m well spent already on the man from Boro.

More to Shearer than goals maybe?

  2. Postpublished at 40 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

Barry Davies is keen to point out that Brian McClair is doing the most to get Manchester United going but it's a stodgy old affair.

New Premier League, same old English football? Plenty of headers and tackles. 90% perspiration, 10% inspiration.

  3. Postpublished at 39 mins

    Arsenal 2-0 Norwich

They've been talked up as favourites for the Premier League and you can see why. Great start from Arsenal and with their defence you can't see Norwich having much chance from here.

  4. goal

GOAL - Arsenal 2-0 Norwichpublished at 39 mins

    Kevin Campbell (39 mins)

Arsenal flexing their muscles now and it's 2-0 to the Gunners. Lee Dixon crosses this time, Norwich let the ball bounce and Kevin Campbell is onto it quickly, flashing a shot in off the far post.

Signed, sealed and delivered for George Graham's side?

  5. Postpublished at 38 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

The Manchester United fans in good voice as Clayton Blackmore plants a free-kick over the top. Marginal gains.

  6. goal

GOAL - Crystal Palace 1-0 Blackburnpublished at 37 mins

    Mark Bright (37 mins)

He got 21 goals last season, and Mark Bright is up and running for Palace already!

Richard Shaw swings in a cross and Bright rises like the proverbial salmon to plant a header into the net.

Wow. What a weekend of sport. First this new-fangled Premier League thing today, then hopefully Our Nige being crowned F1 World Champion tomorrow. We've never had it so good.

  9. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 34 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

Oooh and almost calamitous at the back from Gary Pallister, who is having a really poor start to the season. It's a routine ball forwards for him to deal with but he heads it past Peter Schmeichel, who is a relieved man to see the ball bounce off the post.

The backpass rule is already causing chaos...

  10. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 33 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

The ball is in the net but Andrei Kanchelskis has clearly fouled Simon Tracey in the process. Ragged from the visitors.

The debate over the origins and the demise of the halfway flags continues...

The flags were just there to mark the halfway point. A relic of the good old days, like combovers and defending

    David in Redhill.

Zico: Regards halfway line flags - I think the 'powers that be' we call TV decided to remove them due to distractions.

  12. Postpublished at 32 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

Mark Hughes is a cut above the rest of this Manchester United side on the evidence so far. His place is supposedly under threat from new signing Dion Dublin but he's shown enough to suggest that he has a future at the club...

  13. goal

GOAL - Ipswich 1-0 Aston Villapublished at 31 mins

    Gavin Johnson (31 mins)

What a start for the new boys! Ipswich lead and it's one of the goals of the day, Gavin Johnson taking a touch 25 yards out and then slamming a shot into the corner.

Rhys Lewis: I was at the Dell as Saints and Spurs drew 0-0. Only fun was in giving the keepers the wooooaahs whenever there was a back pass

  15. ouch!

    Postpublished at 28 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

A clash of heads in midfield as Alan Cork and Steve Bruce combine. Both players have sons who they reckon will make it in the game. Talk is cheap...

  16. goal

GOAL - Arsenal 1-0 Norwichpublished at 28 mins

    Steve Bould (28 mins)

It's in there! Arsenal lead and it's two of the big back five who combine. Nigel Winterburn's cross, Steve Bould's header. Textbook.

News coming in from one of the title favourites...

  18. Postpublished at 26 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

Will we ever say a day when goalkeepers don't just bomb the ball 90-yards downfield when they have possession?

Peter Schmeichel thwacks the ball into the stratosphere and Andrei Kanchelskis almost knocks himself out trying to flick it on.

At the other end Brian Deane glides away from Denis Irwin and puts in a dangerous cross. He seems to have the lot.

This is a battle that may not have been won just yet....

After the ridiculousness of the European Championships and everyone having their own number in the squad, how refreshing to go back to good old 1-11. I hope Fifa and Uefa take note, or we'll have players putting their names on the shirts next!

  20. CLOSE!published at 24 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

Best moment yet for the visitors. Ryan Giggs picks out Mark Hughes, who swivels and hits a volley clean over the top. Difficult chance for Sparky, but he is a volley specialist.
