  1. Deane for England?published at 15:23 British Summer Time 15 August 2017

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

    Gary Lineker
    Ex-England striker on BBC One

    Graham Taylor

Brian Deane has got every chance of being in the England squad. Graham Taylor was there today and if the rumours are true and we are going a bit more direct he could certainly be the man.

He's big, he's strong, he's a real handful. And he scores goals.

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

As I mentioned earlier on Joe, Graham Taylor is at Bramall Lane this afternoon to see for himself. Brian Deane has been brilliant so far. Too quick.

With all the focus on Shearer this summer, it feels like everyone's forgotten about Deano. Looks on fire at the minute – Bruce & Pallister unable to cope. Taylor surely can't leave him out of the next England squad?

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

Manchester United not getting the rub of the green from officials in the opening minutes of the Premier League. A Ryan Giggs shot is deflected over the top but a goal kick is given instead of a corner.

Halfway flags. Why were they there? And when did they go? Help us out...

Trouser Banter: Re: 15:06. They were literally there to mark the halfway point of the pitch but were always optional, unlike the corner flags.

  6. Giggs penalty appealpublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 15 August 2017

    Alan Hansen
    Former Scotland and Liverpool defender

    Ryan Giggs

It's a stonewall penalty! No doubt about it.

If the referee gives it there's every chance he would have had to send Tracey off. It was a bad challenge, no doubt about it.

  7. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 19 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

    Got to be! No!

Ryan Giggs runs on to a long ball from Darren Ferguson, beautifully flighted, and Simon Tracey in the Sheffield United goal cleans him out!

That's as blatant a penalty as you'll see, but referee Brian Hill is not interested.

A few Manchester United players surround the ref. No, honestly...

    Fergie under pressure.....

If Man Utd lose today, Ferguson is on borrowed time. 3 cups in 6 years? Not good enough for a club of United's size. The difference could be former Cambridge United hitman Dion Dublin, unless he breaks his leg, which is unlikely...

  9. Postpublished at 17 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

Manchester United seeing more of the ball but doing precisely nothing with it. The loss of Paul Ince and absence of Bryan Robson leaves them light in both quality and drive in the middle of the park.

Perhaps you can suggest a new midfielder they may look to in the next year or so?

Jon Barbuti: Compare and contrast. Simon Tracey looks assured and confident. Schmeichel looks nervous. Know who I'd rather have in nets

  11. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

Ryan Giggs has made a break into the Blades penalty area as the visitors look to dominate but they haven't tested Simon Tracey in nets once yet.

Andrei Kanchelskis of the CIS hasn't featured yet.

  12. goal

GOAL - Everton 0-1 Sheffield Wednesdaypublished at 15 mins

    Nigel Pearson (15 mins)

When even big Nev is having a bad day, you know something is going on!

Everton keeper Neville Southall makes a total hash of a corner and leaves Nigel Pearson to finish from six yards out.

  13. goal

GOAL - Leeds 1-0 Wimbledonpublished at 14 mins

    Lee Chapman (14 mins)

    Lee Chapman

Oh dear! Some woeful defending from Roger Joseph gets the defending champions up and running in the Premier League.

Gary McAllister's cross from the right should be cut out by Joseph but he takes a poor touch, Lee Chapman takes it off his toes and bundles home.

Is that a sign of uncertainty because of the backpass rule? Last season Joseph would have just played that back to his keeper.

  14. There to be won...published at 12 mins

    Leeds 0-0 Wimbledon

Dear oh dear that's a wild challenge from Eric Cantona! The sort of thing he is renowned for. A great player on his day though. I'm not sure he's necessarily a Howard Wilkinson sort of player.

    Eric Cantona
  15. Postpublished at 12 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

Brian McClair got 25 goals last season for Manchester United and he looks the man most likely for the men in blue. The Scot has had two shots from range over the bar.Are Alex Ferguson's side lacking a bit up front though? They look a bit one-dimensional. Though they are having more of the game now.

  16. They don't make 'em like they used to...published at 11 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

    Barry Davies
    BBC commentator at Bramall Lane

    Alan Cork

Alan Cork, looking to be the first man to score in all four divisions of the Football League and the Premier League.

  17. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 10 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

Brian Deane is an animal, Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister cannot handle him. Deane rolls away to score again but the offside flag has long since gone up.

As sure fire a 90s hit as El Dorado.

Dear BBC, I would like to congratulate you on your wonderful new show El Dorado. It is very enjoyable and will surely both outshine and outlive even the new "Premier League" when it comes to weekly entertainment.

  19. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 9 mins

    Sheffield United 1-0 Manchester United

Paul Ince has had to come off after that first-minute injury. On comes the studious Mike Phelan.

A midfield of Phelan and Darren Ferguson. Title-winning?

  20. goal

GOAL - Coventry 1-0 Middlesbroughpublished at 9 mins

    John Williams (9 mins)

A tap-in. Former postman John Williams has Coventry up and running, steering home a cross from the right.
