Sadio Mane scampers off down the left and shrugs his marker off to get into the box. He crosses low for Roberto Firmino, who has just the goalkeeper to beat, but the Brazilian's shot is straight at Oliver Baumann before the ball rebounds off a defender and just wide.

Hoffenheim missed a poor penalty but over the first 45 minutes Liverpool have just shaded it. They have had most of the possession. Salah should have scored and Lovren has just headed wide but a good job so far.

The whistle goes for half-time.

An enjoyable 45 minutes of football with Liverpool ahead.

But it's Liverpool who go close to a second as Dejan Lovren nods a header just wide of the far post.

So close.

The 45 minutes are up and there's one minute added on. That chance has perked Hoffenheim right up and they are finishing the half on the front foot.

It is a great save from Mignolet again. It sat up well for Gnabry and Wagner should have scored following up.

BIG chance for Hoffenheim!

A high ball into the box causes all sorts of problems for Liverpool as Joel Matip gets brushed off by Serge Gnabry in the middle of the box. The Hoffenheim forward sweeps a shot at goal, Simon Mingolet blocks it before Sandro Wagner shoots wide from loose ball.
