I thought that was going to be a goal. Hoffenheim have been nervous in the opening minutes but they are just starting to relax.

Great defending is followed by suspect defending as Dejan Lovren struggles to clear a free-kick, the ball bouncing off his boot, body and face before Simon Mignolet bails out his team-mate.

  3. CLOSE!published at 7 mins

    Hoffenheim 0-0 Liverpool

Ooh, vital, vital interception by Joel Matip!

Hoffenheim are using the flanks well as they attack down the right through ex-Leicester man Andrej Kramaric. His cross is a great one and looks certain to reach Serge Gnabry in the middle of the box, but Matip sticks out a boot to clear.

Great start by the hosts, they look well up for this one.

    Hoffenheim 0-0 Liverpool

Simon Mignolet charges out of his area to clear the ball away from Serge Gnabry but is momentarily in danger as Hoffenheim pick up possession as the Liverpool keeper desperately races back to his unguarded net. Fortunately for the visitors, Hoffenheim are unable to capitalise.

    Hoffenheim 0-0 Liverpool

Plenty of possession for Liverpool in the early stages as Mohamed Salah, who scored and impressed generally on his debut against Watford at the weekend, sends a low cross in for Roberto Firmino but Hoffenheim clear ahead of the forward.

It will be interesting. Alberto Moreno gets criticised for his defensive qualities but he is spare tonight as the Hoffenheim wing-backs play quite deep.

As Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann said earlier, he doesn't like his side to make risky tackles but rather pressure their opponents into mistakes. Expect Liverpool players not to have much time on the ball.

I think with Philippe Coutinho, this is his one and only chance to go to Barcelona. They will look elsewhere. He is not at the level of Luis Suarez or a Lionel Messi. If he turns round and says 'OK, I'm not going to play' what do you do?

They have sold players in recent years. The model has been to buy young, make better and sell. Is that not what they have done with Coutinho?

Liverpool's defence was a bit suspect in Saturday's 3-3 draw at Watford but don't worry Reds' fans, Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann is not a fan of defending either. Or at least the tackling aspect of defending.

"Nah, I am not too keen on tackles," he said. "There are too many unknown quantities. The ball can fall here, fall there, take a bounce, go out for a throw-in or end up at an opposition player’s feet. The referee can give a free-kick to us or to our opponent."

I wouldn't start Alberto Moreno. Never. He makes so many mistakes. He almost cost them against Villarreal in the Europa League last season. I find it strange. He would make a good wing-back, but defensively? No. They are making it very easy for the opposition to score.

The match programme tonight will be a collectors item. Good quality and well produced with it being Hoffenheim's first ever European game.

There's a bit of Roberto Firmino on his career to date; he's added a few more tattoos since his Hoffenheim days. Other pages are dedicated to Gerrard and Dalglish.

One person who certainly knows all about Hoffenheim is Roberto Firmino.

The Liverpool forward spent four years at the German club, scoring 49 goals in 153 appearances, before moving to the Reds in 2015.

Liverpool will look to Firminio to provide creativity in the absence of Coutinho.
