Basel's major goal threat will come from Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who has scored seven goals in as many Swiss Super League matches this season.

The Dutchman only scored two goals in 28 appearances for Norwich City in a disastrous £8.5m move in 2013.

Basel head coach Raphael Wicky said: "I only want to judge him from the time he has been in Switzerland and he has been fantastic for us.

"He is looking fantastic on the field - he is a real striker in the box, he knows where the goal is - but he is also fantastic to have in the team as a personality.

"I believe that he can score and I hope that he will score goals in the Champions League for us as well."

Liverpool's Champions League draw makes them the British club most likely to qualify for the knockout stage, according to an analytical study.

Gracenote Sports, external says their chances of progressing from the group stage rose by 30% when they were drawn with Sevilla, Spartak Moscow and Maribor.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are the sides given the best chance - 97% - of reaching the last 16.

Scottish champions Celtic are given just a 4% chance of going through.

Former England boss Roy Hodgson says he is "close" to taking over as Crystal Palace manager following Frank de Boer's sacking.

De Boer was dismissed on Monday after five games in charge.

Hodgson was at Palace's training ground on Tuesday and told Sky Sports that he had yet to sign a contract but was "pleased" to be returning to football.

The 70-year-old has been out of management since quitting England after their defeat by Iceland at Euro 2016.

For me, Chelsea is the team which will go the furthest in this competition. Man City have a great team but defensively I’m not too sure. But Chelsea, with a coach who can change his tactics and play the counter attack game, I’d say they are best equipped.

I think in the Europa league Manchester United were the strongest team but, in this competition, if they get to the quarter-finals then I think they will have done well.

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan speaking on BBC Radio 5 live earlier today: "United have been out of the Champions League for a couple of years so they will have to feel their way through, but I expect them to be good in all the competitions this season.

"Tonight, they're at home, the crowd will be expecting and I think they should win this game. They do have a couple of injuries at the back so they will have to shuffle things around a bit but they have the squad to deal with that."

Blue is the colour (football is the game...) because United became European Champions for the first time at Wembley fifty seasons ago wearing blue, and they won the Europa League last season in blue.

No special welcome for Neymar - Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers insists Celtic "will not be intimidated" by Paris St-Germain's attacking talent.

But he says "attitude is everything" ahead of his side's Champions League Group B opener.

Rodgers' side will line up against a team he believes "were put together to win this competition" after signing Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

"We just aim to play our game, based around being aggressive defensively and having a physical edge," Rodgers said.

"If you stand off top-class players they will show you why they are top class."
