You have to be extra brave to play against a Real Madrid team who can hurt you on the break when they counter.

    I think Madrid underestimated Spurs.

    Tough!

So if the group stage ended today, the runners-up pot would be: Basel, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus, Sevilla, Shakhtar, Porto, and Real Madrid. Outrageous.

  6. Wide open?published at 21:56 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2017

A lot of talk now that Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Atletico and Real Madrid are all having a poor season (by their high standards) so the gates are open for a Premier League side or PSG to come through.

    Thoughts?

Ben Clarkson: Spurs' rise has been incredible. Broke into the top 4 and stayed there, regular CL football and now hammering Real Madrid!

Stuart: Not bad for English football, topping 4 out of 8 groups. Could we see an all English final?

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can tells BT Sport: "It was difficult in the first half because they were deep but we got more space in the second half and it was a game where we had to be patient.

"We could do better this season but it is still early. Now we are in a good positioning in the Chmapions League and hopefully we will be in the next round."

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold: "We noticed a lot of our chances were coming from crosses so we decided to continue to do that in the second half.

"It is hard because their aim is to come here for a point and we want all three. There are different objectives, we want to score and they are trying to stop up. Any team that comes here is always good at that. We have to break it down and we did that in the second half."

We await Mauricio Pochettino, this must rank as one of his finest hours as Tottenham manager. It finished 3-1 but could have been more against the European Champions.

Dele Alli who scored twice has just said in a TV interview “We don't want to just compete with these teams we want to beat them,” and I think that says it all about the mentality and belief of this Tottenham side.

Tom Castle: Liverpool with the only clean sheet in the Champions League today. Collect your fortune if you picked that one.

Spartak attempted to come back with a goal from Zé Luís, making the final score Sevilla 2-1 Spartak. This means Sevilla have been unbeaten at home for a full year!

A very last minute goal from Maxi Pereira means Porto beat Leipzig 3-1.

No change from Shakhtar Donetsk, whose final score against Feyenoord was 3-1.

    Dortmund drew 1-1 with Apoel.

Those complaining about the money coming into English football. Tonight shows that the tide is turning on the continent. Well done City & Spurs.

Vaguaries of the system. United win four games and not yet qualified on 12 points....yet City and Spurs through. Frustrating!

Sergio Aguero has literally not stopped scoring since his first day in the Premier League and it is just phenomenal.

He has never stopped scoring goals and it is right that a player of that calibre is now the record goalscorer in Manchester City's history.

Tottenham goalscorer Dele Alli talking to BT Sport: "It was a fantastic display by us. We knew if we stuck to our gameplan and were solid at back then we'd get chances. We're very happy with the result. I wasn't surprised [we were dominant]. We couldn't believe how much space we had at the Bernabeu. We don't want to just compete with these teams we want to beat them. I'm happy to get two goals but more importantly it was a win."

Tottenham goalscorer Christian Eriksen talking to BT Sport: "Like Dele said we played a professional game. If we had more composure we could have got more. We take this on to the next stage. We're happy to be through."

It was comfortable as well. Tottenham played it perfectly. They respected them but they let Real Madrid earn their respect.

The tempo, the technical ability and the intensity...Real Madrid couldn't get near them. Spurs were better in every department and it was very, very impressive.

Liverpool won too. Still just the one defeat for an English side in the Champions League this season.
