If they've shown dissent, it's difficult to bring players back into the fold. Some managers isolate them completely when they want to go. Others take the tactic that you need to play your strongest team. It's your job as the manager to make sure those players, once they cross the white line, play to their best ability for the team.

    Everton

Ross Barkley has turned down a move to Premier League champions Chelsea in order to stay at Everton, according to the club's majority shareholder.

Farhad Moshiri said the club had accepted a bid and Barkley had agreed personal terms, before changing his mind after passing a medical.

Everton had initially rejected a £25m offer from Chelsea for the 23-year-old England midfielder on Wednesday.

"It is a big surprise but that is football," Moshiri told Sky Sports.

  6. 'A big rock of a defender'published at 22:49 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Steve Crossman
    BBC World Service Sport

Leicester have completed the loan signing of Aleksandar Dragovic from Bayer Leverkusen on a season long loan.

He’s a big rock of a defender, not known for his brilliant footwork…probably never appeared on a Pep Guardiola shortlist.

But the Foxes have been keen on him for a long time and they needed another centre back. He won’t stroll into the team but will be a useful addition.

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Ross Barkley's transfer to Chelsea was all but done. The fee was agreed between £30m and £35m and personal terms had been settled. He was conducting his medical when his agent contacted Everton to say he had changed his mind and wanted to reconsider his options in January. He won't be playing much before December anyway and I'm sure it will be revisited in the New Year.

It certainly is a strange situation.

  14. One you may have missedpublished at 22:38 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

In case you missed it earlier on, Borussia Dortmund have handed the number seven shirt vacated by Ousmane Dembele to an England youth international, after making the most left-field signing of transfer deadline day.

The German giants have signed Manchester City and England Under-17 forward Jadon Sancho for a fee in the region of £10m.

The 17-year-old - who wanted to leave Manchester - had stopped training with the club to force a move. City did not give him permission to speak to any British clubs and a long-term deal was agreed with German side Dortmund.

Sancho has not played a first-team game for anyone, but was a regular in City's youth sides last season - scoring 20 goals in 35 games.

    Luke Dowling

    Former sporting director of Watford

The Premier League is a huge draw to players from abroad. Obviously they have questions about whether the new teams are going to stay up and it's sometimes tough to convince them to sign. As a club, you have to weigh up taking the gamble of wage payments and how confident you are in your scouting team. Brighton, Huddersfield and Newcastle will all have been through this over the summer.
