Ex-Chelsea winger on 5 live Sport

Paul Clement has shown himself to be an astute negotiator with the Renato Sanches deal. It smacks of Sanches putting himself in the shop window and with Wilfried Bony coming back, Clement has done well. However, will they replace the goals (and points) that Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente got for them last season?

  13. 'An unusual signing for a Pochettino-era Tottenham'published at 21:05 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Tottenham Hotspur

Nathan Clark of Talking Tottenham Tactics on the signing of Fernando Llorente:

"This one comes as a little bit of a last-minute surprise with other areas of the squad in, seemingly, more desperate need of attention.

"Spurs have been reportedly looking at young, pacy forwards to offer something different to Harry Kane and also possibly play wide. Instead the 32-year-old target man will look to hang around in the box waiting for crosses to convert. Llorente looks to be a player Spurs want for his threat off the bench. An option to bring on late in games as a battering ram when in search of that last-minute winner.

"Llorente’s age makes him quite unusual for a Pochettino era Spurs signing. Perhaps though, a little bit of experience was seen as a beneficial addition to a young squad.

"Vincent Janssen may now leave, possibly on loan."

  16. New assets in the Championshippublished at 21:02 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    BBC Radio 5 live

Ian Dennis: The best signing I’ve seen in the Football League today? Leeds United have signed Pawel Kubicki. I saw him in the Under 21s tournament and he could be a real player. He’s technically very good and can play on either flank. What a player he could be for Leeds.

Mark Clemmit: There’s some really interesting recruitment models going on in the Championship. There will be some gems that we don’t know about yet but until we’ve seen them play 6-10 games then we can’t really judge them.

Harry Redknapp has spent a fair amount of money at Birmingham this summer but I think the Blues fans will be really pleased with the recruitment they have done.

It's an interesting situation at Wolves who have brought in 11 players - can they bring in a striker before the 11pm deadline?

Meanwhile, it's pretty quiet at Villa today. They’re £14m up in the last two transfer windows as they've been keeping a close eye on Financial Fair Play. Steve Bruce has got a squad of about 26 seniors with some really good kids coming through. He knows he should get them promoted this year or serious questions will be asked.

West Brom turned down offers of around £25m from both Leicester and Arsenal yesterday.

Manchester City were intending to go back today after having an £18m bid turned down previously but once Eliaquim Mangala's proposed move to Crystal Palace broke down, they had no space in their squad for another defender.

  20. Keeping them outpublished at 20:56 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    BBC Radio 5 live

Away from transfers, England boss Gareth Southgate has declared that Joe Hart will be in goal for the next two games against Malta and Slovakia, keeping the emerging crop of English keepers (Jack Butland and Tom Heaton in the current squad) from breaking through.

Andy Townsend: Now is the time to play somebody with more presence than Joe Hart in goal for England. Gareth Southgate has decided to stick with the experienced player but I don't think he's the best goalkeeper.

Charlie Adam: I think Jack Butland is the best goalkeeper. And, as England are playing two sides they should beat comfortably, why not give him or the next keeper after Joe Hart the chance to play in two World Cup qualifiers?
