In contrast, Brighton turned in a masterclass and are quickly adapting to life in the Premier League.

Brighton & Hove Albion

• Brighton and Hove Albion won their first away match in the top-flight since March 1983, ending a winless run of 11 matches. They also recorded their joint-biggest away top-flight win, equalling their 3-0 victory at Crystal Palace in April 1981.

West Ham's next three games?

They travel to Wembley next Wednesday to face Tottenham in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup before another London derby at Crystal Palace on 28 October.

The Hammers then entertain Liverpool on 4 November.

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic speaking to Match of the Day: "The goals affected us. Especially the first one very early. The second was a bit of a killer. We took some risks but to give credit to them they defended really well with numbers.

"I am disappointed. I never point out the players in front of the cameras. They gave their best but it wasn't good enough tonight.

"I have to say sorry to the fans. It's not the first time. They deserve better than this.

What about the "hurricane" he spoke of before the game? "I expect it. It's not a good moment when you lose at home 3-0. Especially against a team you are looking at as a chance to get the points.

"I'm not worried. But I'm realistic on the other hand.

"The speculation was here before. I'm manager of the team, I don't want to hide behind anything. It's my responsibility and it's up to the board of course."

West Ham defender Jose Fonte speaking to Sky Sports: "We need to look at ourselves in the mirror. This happened a few times last season. We have to put this right. We are West Ham and it's just not possible.

"It's disappointing. It's a night to look at and learn from.

"I won't say it's unacceptable. The players tried hard. We tried the best we could, but sometimes it doesn't go your way.

On fans booing: "How can we not understand? They don't like to lose 3-0 at home. We don't either. We're all frustrated, we apologise and we work hard on the training pitch.

"It's not only the manager, it's the players as well. We have an unbelievable squad and should not be in this position."

Michael Rose: Brighton were by far the superior team. I think Slaven Bilic is on very thin ice now.

Peter Hemple: Been a Bilic fan for years but enough is enough, time to go. Signing Hart was a mistake, he is a broken keeper and a has-been.

It felt like West Ham fans have had enough. In the second half I couldn't believe how quiet the fans were. I'm commentating on the game and they aren't getting me excited so i don't blame them at all. There is a problem here.

Brighton boss Chris Hughton, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought we were outstanding. A huge part of the game is how you defend and I thought we defended the crosses and made a lot of blocks.

"We certainly made the most of it. I'm as pleased with the clean sheet as I am with the goals. We used the ball well and nullified the qualities West Ham have got.

There's a problem here and I think they need to address it, not just at manager level but throughout in terms of who is bringing in the players.

The fans could see what was coming and the players didn't have the belief to say 'we have a way of getting through this very good defensive line of Brighton's'.

I felt like Slaven Bilic ran out of ideas a little bit. He looked dejected on the sideline. It felt like a tough moment.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton's Spanish defender Bruno tells Sky Sports: "We've got a great defensive unit.

"After conceding in the last five minutes against Everton I think this win will give us an extra boost. We have a good group of boys and we'll try to keep working in the same way."

Goalscorer Glenn Murray adds: "I'm delighted to get my chance and I think I've taken it."

It's a really tough moment for these fans. They've had a tough couple of years. Performances have not been great for two years and this feels like the nail in the coffin.

I like Slaven Bilic, he feels like a good, honest man. He'll front this up but I don't see how much longer he can go on.

The Hammers are down from 15th to 17th in the table because of goal difference. They could very well end the weekend in the relegation zone. Few who have witnessed this will be surprised if that happens.

I usually don't understand why fans leave early but I understand it tonight. They're in their rights to leave when they have. The team haven't shown desire or fight to get back into the game. It feels like the nail in the coffin to me.
