    Oh, so close again!

Hal Robson-Kanu is inches away. Inches! He shows strength to hold up the ball but his side-foot flashes past the post from just inside the area.

Former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas is the fifth different scorer for Spain, who now lead Liechtenstein 5-0.

In the same group, Italy have gone ahead against Israel courtesy of Ciro Immobile.

    Moldova 0-0 Wales

Most of the play is taking place in the corridor between halfway and the Moldova box. Wales plug away and force a corner. Good pressure.

Having allowed play to continue, the ref goes back to book Dinu Graur for a nasty sliding tackle on Ben Davies.

The corner is swung in and punched clear by Ilie Cebanu.

Ben Woodburn is warming up down the touchline to the delight of the Red Wall who have just chanted his song to the tune of David Bowie's Star Man. I would relay it to you - it's brilliant if not a little sweary.

Another effort from range from Wales, this time from Tom Lawrence, who turns away from his marker well but fires over the bar.

Gareth Bale hits the target for Wales but it is too close to the keeper, who spills the ball initially before gathering at the second attempt. Good signs.

Wales need a little bit more energy and enthusiasm, more belief, in this half.

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Serbia

Early chance for Serbia in the second half as Dusan Tadic sees a shot saved by Darren Randolph.

Ireland launch an attack straight after and Shane Long glances a header wide.

We are back under way in Chisinau. And shortly afterwards, the game restarts in Dublin.

  12. Postpublished at 20:47 British Summer Time 5 September 2017

OK, not the best first halves of football. But there is 45 minutes in Chisinau and another in Dublin that can make up for that.

To be fair, there are only six goals across nine games in the qualifying games in Europe tonight so far. And Spain have scored four of them in Liechtenstein.

    More goals please.

Wales' players said a half-time tongue-lashing from Chris Coleman helped inspire a second-half turnaround in their 1-0 win over Austria on Saturday.

Again, tonight's game is goalless at the break, albeit against weaker opposition.

Wales have pressed patiently for that opening goal but, given their lack of quality and invention in those opening 45 minutes, you would imagine Coleman will have a few stern words with them in the changing room.

Wales have had lots of the ball but not had created enough shots on goal. Moldova have been gritty but not created enough going forward. They need a little bit of quality and must do better in the second half.

You give it 10 minutes into the second half before bringing Ben Woodburn on.

It is not easy when on side is sitting back and not interested in going forward, Wales have not been at their best and found it difficult. They have tried and probed but the players are getting impatient.

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Serbia

The Republic will be happy enough to get a break for 15 minutes after Serbia started to take control in the second quarter.

The Irish started well as Shane Duffy had a headed effort correctly ruled out for offside and Shane Long tested Stojkovic but the Serbs then began to find their fluency. Filip Kostic has been particularly impressive for the visitors.

  16. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:34 British Summer Time 5 September 2017

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Serbia

The whistle blows in Dublin. No goals here either. This group remains completely in the balance.

  17. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:33 British Summer Time 5 September 2017

    Moldova 0-0 Wales

The half ends with Aaron Ramsey blazing over from inside the box.

It's tough going for Wales in Chisinau. They've bossed possession but have largely been restricted to long-range efforts.

No need to panic but a nerve-settler would be good early in the second half.

Serbia definitely looking the more threatening - this time Antonio Rukavina shoots some way over from 16 yards when he wasn't under all that much pressure.
