The first Welsh player to go into the book is Andy King for a lunging tackle on Alexandru Pascenco in midfield. He is not one of the players facing a suspension, though.

Serbia are starting to find their passing fluency, which is a worrying sign for the Republic, as Hoolahan has gone a little quiet. But it's still goalless and the home crowd are generating serious noise at the Aviva.

Just the six more goals to go to hit double figures.

Manchester City midfielder David Silva has added the latest goal for Spain, who now lead Liechtenstein 4-0.

The Moldova defence is very gritty and stubborn. It is going to need that extra quality that Wales have within their ranks to break the deadlock.

A good ball in from the wide area, a Gareth Bale free-kick...?

So as we move towards half-time the situation in Group D is very much as you were at the start of the night....

    Serbia - 16 points

Republic of Ireland - 14 points

    Wales - 12 points

Gareth Bale is better than this. He fires a free-kick from the left that starts to dip but nowhere near enough to hit the goal from the trajectory he started it at. We'll call that a sighter. Five minutes left in the half.

This game is quite similar in pattern to Wales' 4-0 drubbing of Moldova in their first game of this campaign.

On that occasion, Chris Coleman's men had to wait until the 38th minute for Sam Vokes to break Moldova's stubborn resistance.

The floodgates opened from that point and, if Wales can find that vital opening goal here, Coleman will hope the hosts fold in similar fashion.

    Republic of Ireland 0-0 Serbia

Serbia go close as Darren Randolph comes to Ireland's rescue. Filip Kostic drives in down the right and crosses low for Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic to hit a first-time low shot that the home keeper has to dive low to tip away.

There are 10 minutes left in the first half of what is shaping up to be a tense old affair.

Loads and loads of possession for the Welsh but without laying a glove on Moldova goalkeeper Ilie Cebanu, he has not had much to do.

Wales are showing patience but also purpose. Most of the final drive to make something happen is coming from Joe Allen, who fires a cross-field pass to Tim Lawrence, whose headed cross just fails to tee up Hal Robson-Kanu.

From a kit point of view I like the Moldovan red kit tonight - side on it's got a bit of Christmas jumper about it.

As for the game - there are a lot of arms folded in the corner of the ground where the Welsh fans are camped after a few anxious spells, not their usual vocal self. All the noise is coming from the home support.

    Moldova 0-0 Wales

Wales have had over 70% of possession in Chisinua. They've been kept, largely, to long shots so far, though. Saying that, they are getting closer. Ben Davies unleashes another from range that skips just a yard past the post.

If Wales take the lead, they will score three or four goals.

They just need that first opening and until they do, Moldova will feel they are doing OK.

One of the big players needs to step up and thread through a magical ball.

Gareth Bale hasn't quite fine tuned his radar yet. He picks up the ball near the edge of the Moldova box but fires his effort wide of the post. He raises his hand in apology. Like there is a single Wales player who'll give him a hard time. You fire away Gareth, son.

If you don't mind the Brutalist architecture and visible signs of wear and tear, the block of flats overlooking Stadionul Zimbru looks like a decent spot to watch some football.

A handful of Moldovans have gathered in the balconies and openings between flats to watch tonight's game. International football for free without leaving your flat? Sounds good to me.

Cyrus Christie has some serious wheels on him. He charges away down the right and swings over a cross that deflects away from Shane Long and safely into Serbian possession. It remains goalless after 24 minutes in Dublin.

Hearts in Welsh mouths. Moldova swing in a free-kick, which Artur Ionita gets highest to meet and head back across goal. Wayne Hennessey is down sharpish to tip the ball away before play is halted for a foul. And breathe.

The Republic go close. Shane Long cuts in from the left and fires a rising shot that Vladimir Stojkovic has to dive to tip over. The resulting corner comes to nothing.

Wales are seriously testing this Moldova defence now. Joe Allen's pass splits them open but Tom Lawrence's dinked cross finds only a man in a red shirt, who clears.
