Herbert Chapman won the league with Huddersfield...

Herbert Chapman may have passed away almost 74 years ago, but his memory is rightly cherished. Chapman won one FA Cup and two league titles with Huddersfield. At Highbury he exactly matched that trophy haul before his untimely death at the age of 55.

This first league meeting since 1972 warrants a trip down memory lane.

For example, Chapman's Huddersfield once thrashed Arsenal 4-0, 3-1, 6-1, 4-0 and 5-0 in successive meetings. Cliff Bastin, Arsenal's record goalscorer until the Ian Wright era, was a Chapman signing: and it was Chapman who embraced, perfected - and some say invented - the W-M tactical formation, external which became a blueprint for its time.

Chapman was also responsible for one of the FA Cup's great traditions. In 1930, when his Arsenal team faced his old club Huddersfield in the Cup final, the two sides walked from the tunnel side-by-side for the first time in tribute to the great man. They have done so ever since.

Huddersfield haven't played Arsenal in the league since 22 January 1972, a time when the New Seekers were number one, Claudia Winkelman and Lilian Thuram had just been born, Diamonds are Forever was in the cinemas and Keith Richards was booted off stage while jamming with Chuck Berry for playing 'too loud.'

    Better times.

The Terriers lost 1-0 at Highbury, by the way, with George Armstrong on target. Huddersfield haven't won at Arsenal since 1954...

Mark T: Pardew, Allardyce and Moyes should all come with a “use by summer” label. Sick and tired of seeing the same below par managers in and out every season. Bring back the good old days where managers could make a decent go of a club and were not punished for average under-performing players. Player power has killed proper football and I blame club owners for allowing the game to be all about the money.

    Ah, the good old days...

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan: "It feels like it's getting harder and harder for us. Southampton are a team who defend but also know how to play. They will be tougher than we thought maybe a few days ago.

"It's very exciting here, you can imagine. It's a lot of fun to train and play with these guys. We want to keep up our winning streak. It's up to us, we want to have fun tonight. It's my first league start of the season, it's been a long wait."

"The start will be very important. We were strong recently at home and when you look back it is because we started the game well.

"It is funny because I watched Huddersfield against Reading in the play-off final. They showed they had the nerves to deal with that. I watched their game on Sunday as well and we know this will be a difficult game."

Just the one change for Arsenal as Mesut Ozil recovers from illness to take his place in the starting XI. Alex Iwobi, who has been suffering with a dead leg, is the man to make way but is fit enough to take his place on the bench.

The game comes too soon for Theo Walcott. The forward is back in full training after two weeks out with illness but is not included in the Gunners' squad for tonight's game.

Arsenal: Cech, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal, Bellerin, Xhaka, Ramsey, Kolasinac, Ozil, Sanchez, Lacazette. Subs: Mertesacker, Wilshere, Giroud, Ospina, Iwobi, Welbeck, Coquelin.

Happy to see the same old faces managing in the Premier League or would you like some new names?

Michael Haimes: The football community showing loyalty to established managers by welcoming them back ought to send a message to whimsical chairman that bad spells are inevitable and not a direct representation of a man's capacity.

Tim Horgan: Eight British managers in the league but none in the top six, says it all really. Also, none doing it in any of the other top leagues.

  19. Should Crouch start?published at 18:48 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2017

    Stoke v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

    Guy Mowbray
    Match of the Day commentator

Stoke needed a pick-me-up after their late loss at Crystal Palace, and Peter Crouch signing on for another season will have helped.

Should Mark Hughes now give the man he says has "a major impact on games" his first league start of the season against his former club?

Nothing to do with sentiment. Crouch IS Stoke's leading scorer and would relish facing Liverpool's defence - porous away from home.

The Potters have "defended poorly in the last few games" (Hughes again) themselves though, and it's there where their main focus lies.

Whichever rotation of forwards Liverpool field for this game; they'll expect to score - and they'll expect to win.
