Liberia: George Weah supporters celebrate presidential poll result

Former footballer George Weah is set to become Liberia's president at the second attempt.

With most ballots from Tuesday's run-off vote counted, Mr Weah is well ahead of opponent Joseph Boakai.

He will succeed Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first elected female president, in Liberia's first democratic handover in decades.

Mrs Sirleaf defeated Mr Weah in the presidential election run-off in 2005, after the end of a brutal civil war.

Expect a big performance from Wilfred Zaha this evening.

He’s been exceptional at Crystal Palace since he returned from injury. Very dangerous on the ball. He’s also stronger to knock off it now.

I saw Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace last week and he was asked if he could guarentee Zaha still being here in February, his response: “I don’t think that as a manager you can ever give guarantees on anything. It’s a great credit to the club and Zaha if there are rumours circulating of so-called bigger clubs looking at him and maybe thinking of making a bid, we should be pleased about that.

“That means he’s playing well. That’s the way we’re looking at it.”

Hodgson also gave Zaha his first England cap. He said last week he regrets not giving him more. You wonder if the FA will regret letting him switch nationalities and choosing to play for the Ivory coast.

Johnny Magrinho: Arsenal’s bench is woeful. No game changers whatsoever. Think they’ll struggle tonight seeing as Sanchez can’t be bothered anymore, Ozil can’t be the only one trying all the time & Lacazette is horribly average.

I think they have missed Benteke's physical presence and I think Arsenal will need to be aware of him - I think that is what Arsene Wenger is thinking with going with a back three. Palace have some good wide players who can put some good balls in and Benteke will be a big threat.

It has been an incredible turnaround under Roy Hodgson and I can't describe what an achievement that is. They have a good structure in terms of wide players and attacking full backs. There is no reason they shouldn't score goals, they just needed to get the right structure and formation and all credit to Roy Hodgson.

Palace are on a great run and coming off the back of that form gives them belief. I think they have got every chance in what should be an interesting and intense game.

West Ham defender Reece Oxford is set to complete a surprise move to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig next month.

Oxford, 19, has been on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach and has made three league appearances this season.

However, it is understood West Ham are to recall the England Under-20 international, then sell him to RB Leipzig for a fee that could rise to 19m euros (£16.88m) including add-ons.

Leipzig tried to buy Oxford in 2016 but could not agree a fee with the Hammers.

You have to go back 53 days for the last time Palace lost in the Premier League. A 1-0 defeat to Totteham at Wembley. Since then Roy Hodgson has transformed the club. They have moved off the bottom and are eight unbeaten.

As for Arsenal, Wenger will move level with Sir Alex Ferguson on 810 Premier League matches as a manager. Some thought he would never remain in charge after losing 3-0 to Palace here on a Monday night, external in April last season. That defeat actually galvanised Arsene Wenger and his Arsenal team. They went on to win nine of their last 10 matches and Wenger picked up his seventh FA Cup.

If you'd asked me to name a list of 50 managers who would be in the frame for the Swansea job I don't think I would have got close.

It's a strange one - Swansea City have appointed former Sheffield Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal as their new permanent boss.

Player-coach Leon Britton had been in temporary charge of Swansea since the Premier League's bottom side sacked Paul Clement on 20 December.

Carvalhal, 52, was dismissed by Wednesday on Christmas Eve, with the Owls 15th in the Championship table.

The Portuguese joins Swansea initially until the end of the season with the option of an extension.
