    St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

Rangers right-winger Daniel Candeias is ruled offside when through one-on-one with the Northern Irish goalkeeper. Carlos Pena looked to be offside but he halted his run; Candeias is not best pleased, though his shot was saved well by Alan Mannus in any case.

    St Johnstone 0-1 Rangers

Carlos Pena all of a sudden has the chance to score a second as he moves the ball on to his left foot on the 18-yard line. However, in storms Aaron Comrie to make an important tackle and Pena's shot is never a threat to Alan Mannus's goal.

Pedro Caixinha applauds that goal for his team. He's not left the technical area once. Rangers look to have taken some confidence from going ahead.

Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha enjoyed that goal, turning to the main stand with fist clenched. What's Portuguese for "get in, my son!"?

    Carlos Pena

Mexican midfielder Carlos Pena peels off his marker, drifts to the back post and stabs the ball skilfully into the roof of Alan Mannus's net from a wonderful cross in from the right from James Tavernier.

Rangers have defended set-pieces really quite well. Bruno Alves has got his head on to a few of them and cleared the ball really, really well.

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Graham Cummins is the beneficiary of a superb Murray Davidson tackle in midfield as he picks up the ball and leaves two black-jerseyed Gers in his wake as he races into the box. The Saints striker makes a good connection with his left boot but Wes Foderingham throws up a hand to make a good save.

Rangers defender Bruno Alves, back from international duty with Portugal, is caught on his ankle by a bad challenge by Steven MacLean.

  10. Postpublished at 17 mins

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Murray Davidson fouls Alfredo Morelos. Rangers try something different with the free-kick, Declan John peeling off to the left of the penalty box but he is closed down quickly and the chance is snuffed out. It's at moments like these when the players will wish they just gave it a bash at goal. In any case, Rangers fashion another half-chance, Josh Windass blasting wide from 22 yards.

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Rangers have worked their way into the match after a hectic opening. No goalmouth chances to speak of, but the likes of Saints' Murray Davidson and Gers' Declan John look in the mood.

  12. Postpublished at 13 mins

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Murray Davidson eases away from his marker and finds space to advance to the halfway line. However, his pass to the left for David Wotherspoon is a bit too meaty and Rangers win back possession.

  13. Postpublished at 11 mins

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Rangers enjoy a period of possession, making 10 or so passes but always under pressure from a hungry St Johnstone team. They have not been allowed to get in to their stride.

Good start by the home side here - although Rangers have responded well. Both managers out in their technical areas to shout instructions.

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Striker Alfredo Morelos makes a run towards the Saints box and passes infield for Carlos Pena, but the ball gets caught under his feet, and a lanky limb belonging to Murray Davidson comes in to scoop it up like a game of Hungry Hippos.

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

Stefan Scougall takes the free-kick, which is headed clear, but the Saints midfielder picks up the ball again and makes a good run into the box. Rangers clear again but concede a corner out on the right, with Murray Davidson causing mayhem in the air. When the ball comes in, Rangers centre-half Bruno Alves heads clear for another Saints corner, which the visitors clear. There's a pattern here... They have their foot on the pedal, the hosts.

  17. Postpublished at 2 mins

    St Johnstone 0-0 Rangers

St Johnstone are in their home blue and white strip, while Rangers are wearing their black number. The hosts are on their toes, winning a free-kick 30 yards out on the right.

  19. Saints 'have to do better'published at 19:45 British Summer Time 13 October 2017

    St Johnstone v Rangers (19:45)

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright: "We haven't got a great record over Rangers.

"We know it's going to be a difficult. From our point of view, our focus totally on us and we have to do better. We have to do better than particularly the Dundee and Aberdeen game. Far, far too many individual errors give away cheap goals and you can't do that at this level.

"Tonight I'm looking for a solid performance but I want to make sure we're on the front foot as much as we can."

OK, let's forget our World Cup failings for a while and concentrate on the three points on offer at McDiarmid Park. The teams are out on the pitch.
