Simon Turner agrees with Keith Gillespie on Twitter: Horrible pitch conditions and the Swiss looked nervous during the anthems, but the key for NI is to keep Shaqiri off the ball.

Too much space for Shaqiri. You know what he is going to do - cut inside on his left foot.

Then Seferovic should score. Shaqiri is a problem for us, he possesses such a good left foot that his delivery is first class.

Don't need me to tell you that Xherdan Shaqiri is the danger man. The Stoke player is found wide right in loads of space, cuts inside and has a shot that is saved by Michael McGovern.

Shortly after, he sends in a superb cross, but Haris Seferovic is under it and he completely misses his header. The Swiss forward is having a 'mare.

Fortunately for Northern Ireland, Haris Seferovic has not been at it so far.

He misses another good opportunity after being found by Steven Zuber in the box. He controls well but fires his shot from about 10 yards past the post.

That all came from a poor pass that held up in the mud and gifted possession to the home side.

Michael O'Neill wanted more energy from his side. He is getting that. Jamie Ward - one of the men brought in - is offering a lively outlet on the right.

Switzerland have had 64% of possession so far. But Northern Ireland have not been under the cosh for the whole 20 minutes. Jamie Ward's low cross into the box is hacked away.

    First goal is so important.

The Clowez: How terrible is that pitch?! Surely not an international standard pitch?

David Ljunggren: So what did the Swiss do last night with the pitch? Hold a monster truck derby?

Graham Hodgkin: Played Sunday league game in Eastbourne; match abandoned after 20 mins as every goal kick got blown for a corner! With hailstones!

As you would expect considering the amount of rain that has been dumped on this pitch, it is cutting up all over the place.

Meanwhile, the chances keep coming as Chris Brunt fires a shot from 20 yards straight into the hands of Yann Sommer.

    Really engrossing game, this.

This stadium comes to life when Xherdan Shaqiri gets on the ball. He gathers the ball on the right and cuts inside to unleash a shot with his left foot that is blocked before it can trouble Michael McGovern.

Northern Ireland are clinging on a bit at the moment.

But they can get at Switzerland. Jamie Ward is denied going clear by a last-ditch tackle, before George Saville miss-kicks a shot wide of goal.

Oh, how have Switzerland not scored?!

The hoem side work a brilliant opening for Blerim Dzemaili but his pull-back is sliced over the crossbar by the boot of the very relieved Jonny Evans.

Ten minutes in and the nerves already shredded.

Great work from Gareth McAuley. Xherdan Shaqiri swings in the free-kick but the centre-back rises and powerfully heads clear under pressure.

Xherdan Shaqiri swings a cross into the box that picks out Haris Seferovic in acres of space. He has to score, but fails to even make contact, allowing the ball to skip past the far post.

Chances for Northern Ireland! The ball is swung to the back post, where Jamie Ward is one of two Northern Ireland players, but he loses out to a defender and takes a clattering in the process.

Soon after, Chris Brunt smashes a shot from range that Yann Sommer tips over. From the resulting corner, the ball is nodded out to Stuart Dallas, who fires over.

Great start by the visitors. They've offered more in an attacking sense in the opening three minutes here than for most of the first leg.
