The Dutch do have a lot of possession but as long as they're passing in front of us, it doesn't really bother me. It's pedestrian in the way they're passing. They don't have a cutting edge. They don't get through us and break through the lines.

  2. Chance for Forrestpublished at 25 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Netherlands

Neat approach work from Scotland puts James Forrest in a promising position on the edge of the Netherlands penalty area. The Celtic winger cuts back inside but drags his left-footed shot well wide.

  3. ouch!

    Ouch!published at 22 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Netherlands

Kieran Tierney gets a blow to the back of the head as he goes up for a header...from his own centre-back partner Christophe Berra.

Scotland's new captain brushes it off with minimum fuss.

  4. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Netherlands

A chance for Scotland to apply further pressure on a Dutch defence that doesn't look the hardest nut to crack. But Ryan Christie floats his free-kick over the heads of everyone and out for a corner. Shame.

  5. Postpublished at 16 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Netherlands

Andrew Robertson has not played for his club Liverpool since starting for Scotland against Slovenia a month ago, but the left-back has been in sprightly form so far.

Another whipped cross in from the left flank finds Matt Phillips, but the makeshift striker can't control it.

  6. Netherlands 'wide open' at the backpublished at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Scotland 0-0 Netherlands

    Willie Miller
Former Scotland defender on BBC Sportsound

    Quote Message

It's quite incredible how badly they defend. They basically defend with two centre-backs. Their full-backs have been nowhere near a defensive position as of yet. They're wide open defensively.

  7. CLOSE!published at 11 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Netherlands

Another chance for Matt Phillips, who runs on to a long ball and holds off the challenge of Virgil van Dijk. But he can't get enough power on his close-range effort and Netherlands keeper Jasper Cillessen beats it away comfortably enough.

  8. 'Sensational' block to deny Forrestpublished at 19:57 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Scotland 0-0 Netherlands

    Steven Thompson
Former Scotland striker on BBC Sportsound

I thought he could have passed it into the side. He seemed to have gone for power but it was two fantastic blocks from the Dutch. The second one from Nathan Ake was sensational.

  9. CLOSE!published at 7 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Netherlands

Chances for Scotland. John McGinn plays Matt Phillips through, who creates space for himself but his shot is blocked. The ball deflects to James Forrest 10 yards out, but a Dutch leg diverts the Celtic winger's effort away from the target.

    Promising signs though.

  10. Anyone got a ball?published at 4 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Netherlands

Rather farcically, there is a hold-up in play at Pittodrie while the fourth official locates a new ball. The first one has not been pumped up to the required level apparently.

  11. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Netherlands

Scotland debutant Ryan Jack is a bit short with a back-pass to give keeper Craig Gordon a nervy clearance to deal with in the opening minute.

The Dutch have been hogging the ball ever since.

  13. On the subject of debuts...published at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Scotland v Netherlands (19:45 KO)

It was in a friendly against Denmark on 29 March 2016 that John McGinn and Kieran Tierney (right) made their first appearances for Scotland. Twenty months later and Tierney is leading his country tonight.

Matt Richie's goal secured a 1-0 victory for Scotland that night. What price another notable friendly win for the hosts?

  14. Next manager has 'got to get us qualified'published at 19:39 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

He's got to get us qualified or he gets binned. The next manager gets us qualified or gets binned. If we can't be the best out of 24 teams in Europe to get into the European Championships, then the next manager doesn't deserve to be taken forward.

Malkay Mackay has named a team featuring three debutants and Kieran Tierney as captain.

Gordon Kessack: Hey, we’ve been asking for change and he’s done it. Good on him.

Steve Jackson: We have a natural RB in Paterson and he doesn't start?! Fit enough to make the squad, fit enough to start.

Fraser Allan: Stupid selection and formation and sets debut guys up for failure. No issue with McGinn, McGregor or Christie playing but select a proper right-back and central defender, or at least keep Tierney on the right and play a natural central defender. And play a forward!

Some more of your thoughts after today's news that Malky Mackay will not be the next Scotland manager.

Jim6756: Good news from the SFA at last.

Davy Gardiner: Can't see anyone other than Alex McLeish as a viable candidate (secretly hoping Alex Neil gets it).

The Ginger One: Best result in months!

  18. The present is not Oranjepublished at 19:31 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Scotland v Netherlands (19:45)

What of the Dutch? The future - or the present - is certainly not orange anymore.

They're not quite in Scotland territory yet when it comes to missing major tournaments (10 and counting...), but two in a row for such an established football power - now down to 20th in the world rankings, external - is certainly a troubling trend.

Netherlands finished third in their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign behind France and Sweden, precipitating the international retirement of Arjen Robben. Manager Dick Advocaat will also be stepping down after next week's friendly with Romania.

Ronald de Boer, who won 67 caps and played in the World Cups of 1994 and 1998, believes the Dutch demise is down to "the coming and going of generations".

"The likes of [Robin] van Persie, Robben, [Dirk] Kuyt, [Nigel] de Jong, [Rafael] van der Vaart, they were an exceptional generation, we don't have them anymore," he told BBC Scotland.

"We just have to accept that this generation has gone and it's going to take time for that to come round again."

  20. Five English-based players in Dutch 11published at 19:31 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Scotland v Netherlands (19:45)

The Netherlands may be missing the star names of old, but start tonight with five players plying their trade in the English Premier League.

Crystal Palace right-back Timothy Fosu-Mensah (on loan from Manchester United), Southampton's former Celtic centre-back Virgil van Dijk, Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake, Manchester United's Daley Blind and Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum are all in the side at Pittodrie.

Roma's Kevin Strootman and Lyon winger Memphis Depay, formerly of Manchester United, are other familiar faces.
