We're after your thoughts on who should be the next Scotland boss, after SFA chief executive Stewart Regan ruled interim coach Malky Mackay out of contention.

    Stevie: They've timed this well...

Lainey_D: Wow!! SFA in ‘sensible decision’ shocker. What’s next? Demolishing Hampden?

Gary McKay: Good that he's telling all the players tonight that it probably doesn't matter how they perform tonight, they'll still have to impress someone else.

  2. Captain Kieranpublished at 19:24 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

Interim coach Malky Mackay tells BBC Scotland he sees Kieran Tierney, who starts as a left-sided centre-back tonight, as a "potential leader for club and country for years to come".

"He is tough, tenacious and comfortable on the ball," Mackay said.

"I spoke to Brendan Rodgers at length about this and he absolutely agrees with me. We have got to get two of our best players in Kieran and Andy Robertson in the team.

"When I asked him to play centre-back, he was very happy to grab that chance. When I made him captain, that was the icing on the cake."

Mackay sees Tierney leading a changing of the guard in the national team.

"I am looking at a group that can kick on, I think, for the next five, six, 10 years," he added. "I am looking at them and saying 'Go and get 50 caps'."

SFA chief executive Stewart Regan today confirmed interim Scotland coach Malky Mackay will NOT become Scotland manager on a full-time basis. Here's some of your comments...

Christopher Piras: Thank goodness for that!

Gary Feeney: Reagan saying it won't be Mackay kinda makes me think I should go and put the house on it being him, tbh.

Kenny O'Hara: Paul Lambert I bet you.

Get Involved - If not Mackay, then who?published at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

Whatever happens at Pittodrie this evening, we already know one thing. Malky Mackay, the SFA's Performance Director, will not be remaining as the Scotland coach on a permanent basis.

Stewart Regan chief executive of the Scottish FA, issued a flat denial when asked if Mackay, placed in interim charge after the departure of Gordon Strachan last month, is in contention for the job on a longer-term basi.

"Malky has got a big job to do as performance director, and we have discussed that," Regan told BBC Scotland. "He will go back to performance director after tonight."

So if not Mackay, or David Moyes, who has taken over at West Ham this week, who should be the next Scotland head coach?

Paul Lambert received plenty of backing in the wake of Strachan's departure, while Alex McLeish was not slow to throw his hat into the ring for a second crack at the job.

It may not have escaped your attention that Malky Mackay's squad selections for his first match in charge did not meet with universal approval.

Former Scotland striker Kris Boyd was unimpressed, suggesting the three Aberdeen players named - Ryan Christie, Kenny McLean and Graeme Shinnie - were only in the party to help boost the crowd at Pittodrie, while Boyd also questioned the inclusion of Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack.

Mackay, who was adamant that no player was selected "to sell tickets", has picked two Dons players in his line-up.

Christie, on loan from Celtic, will make his debut in an advanced midfield role supporting Matt Phillips, while midfielder McLean will win only his second cap, after making his debut in a friendly win over the Czech Republic in March 2016.

Jack, who left Aberdeen for Rangers last summer, is predominantly a sitting midfielder, but will start tonight at right-back, where he played on occasion for Aberdeen.

  7. Three debutants for Scotland, Tierney captainpublished at 18:53 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Scotland v Netherlands (19:45 KO)

Interim Scotland coach Malky Mackay has handed three players their international debuts tonight - Aberdeen's on-loan midfielder Ryan Christie, Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack - playing at right-back tonight - and Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.

Another Aberdeen player, Kenny McLean, wins his second camp in an inexperienced midfield, Hibernian's John McGinn coming into the side today after Celtic's Stuart Armstrong picked up an injury.

Kieran Tierney, a left-back for Celtic used at right-back by former Scotland boss Gordon Strachan, plays at centre-back tonight alongside Hearts' Christophe Berra.

Tierney, winning only his ninth cap, will captain the side. Some accolade for a 20-year-old, but he is a hell of a player.

West Brom's Matt Phillips, used as a winger by Strachan, leads the line up front, with support from Christie and Celtic winger James Forrest.

  8. Is there another Archie out there?published at 18:47 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2017

    Scotland v Netherlands (19:45 KO)

They may not be going to Russia next summer, but remember the days when Scotland used to grace World Cups?

Tonight's Scotland v Netherlands friendly does not - on the face of it - have much riding on it, but for fans of a certain age, the fixture conjurs up memories of possibly Scotland's greatest moment in international football.

What chance another Scotland player working his way into the hearts and minds of the Tartan Army with a sublime piece of individual brilliance a la Archie Gemmill...39 years ago?

While you're contemplating that prospect, have a watch of Archie's goal in all its glory here.
