  2. 'Ten more to be champions'published at 19:47 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Man City 3-1 Newcastle

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Sport: "We need 10 more wins to be champions, and we’ll try for more points. We face these kind of teams – Southampton, West Ham, Bournemouth, who play with the 5-4-1, that’s why it’s so important to attack this kind of team.

"It’s not how many goals you score, it’s how many chances you create, it’s how many chances your keeper has to save. It was important how we reacted at 2-1, we didn’t panic."

  3. Benitez hoping to make signingspublished at 19:41 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Man City 3-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez told Match of the Day: "I think that we wanted to stay in the game and we did it, the penalty was a bit soft and it changed everything. After we score we had a couple of chances. They are a very good team, our reaction was quite good.

"We changed at the end and played with four at the back, the idea was to stay solid and try to regain and play counter attack. At the beginning we were giving the ball away easily. To find the balance between defending and attacking is what we were trying to do.

"I have been praising the players the whole season in terms of effort, sometimes it's a bit of luck. If you have a little bit of luck you can be ahead in some games.

"It's the Premier League, everyone is spending a lot of money, that is why we expect something in this window. Hopefully we can see some new faces before the end of this window."

Mark: Sane is the reason Pep didn't go for Sanchez.

Suraj: Sane reminds me of humbler version of a new future Ronaldo.

    No pressure Leroy...

A deserved win for City. They totally dominated the first half with some breathtaking football. To be fair to Benitez, he made changes and went for it. The mood of the game changed in the second half, it was end-to-end and a pleasure to watch. Ultimately, City got their third and the three points. Great game.

The last player to score a perfect hat-trick in the Premier League before today?

This has been a cracking second half. It could have fizzled out at 2-0 but Newcastle have really gone for it and made this a contest. Benitez has learned from what happened at St James Park and had a go. That's all supporters want from their team and it's been great to watch.

It would probably just have been a consolation but Dwight Gayle should do better with this space in the box to head on goal from Jonjo Shelvey's cross. Looked like he got up too early.

Lovely skip past Oleksandr Zinchenko from Jacob Murhpy. He took his goal really well too. Will Pep Guadiola be manically shouting praise at him after the final whistle?

We are heading into stoppage time. The Etihad Stadium's announcer names Sergio Aguero as man of the match. A perfect hat-trick from him - head, right foot, left foot.

    Three minutes added on.

Leroy Sane does go off now - Brahim Diaz is on to replace him. It's been another great display from Sane. The nutmeg on DeAndre Yedlin as he laid on for Sergio Aguero's third was sublime.

Raheem Sterling is coming off - Bernado Silva is on to replace him. A smattering of applause but nothing like the ovation Leroy Sane would get.

    Man City 3-1 Newcastle

    Steve McClaren

Fantastic goal. What a run by Leroy Sane. His acceleration past two or three was impressive but then his tight control in the penalty area was exceptional. He showed vision and awareness to pick out Aguero in the box and that's the goal they needed to make the last ten minutes comfortable for them. That's got to be game over now.

    Sergio Aguero

That'll do it - and that is the hat-trick for Sergio Aguero.

This goal is all about one man though - Leroy Sane. He twines his way through a series of challenges with poise and cunning before expertly picking out his man in the box.

Surely that is Newcastle out of sight - and City preserving their 12-point lead.
