    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

The last time Newcastle got out of their half was about two hours ago.

But now a big hoof takes the ball right through to Ederson. That will be some kind of relief for the away side. City just keep coming.

Oleksandr Zinchenko looks lively. He's playing left-wing back, which in this team may as well be left wing.

David Silva spills the ball perfectly into Leroy Sane's path, he cuts back with effortless poise.

It falls to Zinchenko, who wins another corner, and then Kyle Walker blazes horribly over. Sublime to ridiculous etc.

  4. Formation surprise?published at 17:38 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Steve McClaren
Ex-England manager on BBC Radio 5 live

It looks as though Newcastle have set up with a back three today. Very defensive and I'm surprised to see midfielder Isaac Hayden playing at the back. It's an interesting shape that they have taken up - not unlike Rafael Benitez to get us talking about tactics.

  5. CHANCE!published at 7 mins

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

City's passing just zips along. It's so, so slick. Kevin de Bruyne, David Silva and Raheem Sterling combine here as Silva ghosts into space in the box from a short corner.

The Spaniard looks to cut back and John Stones fires first-time wide of the post from close range.

  6. An open affairpublished at 17:35 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

    Steve McClaren
Ex-England manager on BBC Radio 5 live

Great chance for Newcastle with Ciaran Clark and he probably should have scored from Atsu's cross. Man City went down the other end and had a fantastic counter attack opportunity as well. This game has started in a really open way and we could be in for a treat.

  7. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

A decent start this for Newcastle but when Manchester City get their passes strung together there's nothing quite like it in this league. The pace of their movement is incredible.

  8. CHANCE!published at 2 mins

    Man City 0-0 Newcastle

Ooof! I tell you what that is a clever bit of play from Newcastle. A quick free-kick from Jonjo Shelvey sets up a chance for Christian Atsu to cross in from the left wing - and for a moment City are are scrambling at the back. Fortunately for the home side a head rises to clear - Oleksandr Zinchenko's.

Manchester City's players greet their opponents with a handshake as they move along Newcastle's lined-up XI. They've all still got their tracksuits on - all except for 21-year-old Oleksandr Zinchenko.

It's -3 degrees in his native part of Ukraine today. This is no chill.

Man City v Newcastle (17:30 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson
BBC football expert on BBC Radio 5 live

City will put last week's defeat down to the fact that Liverpool absolutely swarmed all over them. I doubt their manager Pep Guardiola is going to beat himself up about it too much - and this game is perfect for them to bounce back.

    Prediction: 3-0

It's finally happened, just as Pep Guardiola always insisted it would.

City have lost in the Premier League for the first time this season, which might only serve to make Newcastle's task all the more difficult at a place where they customarily get a thrashing anyway.

After a week when talks about the proposed takeover of their club were branded a '"waste of time', external, Newcastle fans may have rueful thoughts as they enter the Etihad.

Once, THEY were the team that lost 4-3 in thrillers at Anfield.

I think it could end badly for Newcastle this season. There's no assurances about Benitez sticking around. No assurance of new players coming in which they desperately need. As things stand, it would be an unbelievable result for them to stay up.

Don't feel so bad about our impending thumping from City tonight. Other teams doing us a favour with their minus goal differences. Take a bow Brighton and Palace.

Man City v Newcastle (17:30 GMT)

    Nicely put.

But here's another one that will surely fill City hearts with dread...

Newcastle's last two away trips have both ended in victory for Rafael Benitez's men.

They beat West Ham 3-2 on 23 December and won 1-0 at Stoke on 1 January.

The last time they won three in a row away from home in the top flight was in December 2001 - under Bobby Robson.

Ben Dalton: Man City front six this season: 47 goals, 38 assists. Newcastle United front six this season: 8 goals, 4 assists. Oh dear.

Javel Bleach: I'm expecting Man City to unbottle the pressurised rancour from last week's defeat to Liverpool & pour it all over Newcastle United.
