Just when you think he's been immunised against that disease of giving away easy goals, Efe Ambrose switches off completely. What a howler. It's a dreadful mistake and that's game over.

  2. goal

GOAL Aberdeen 3-0 Hibernianpublished at 44 mins

    Gary Mackay-Steven

Oh dear. Efe Ambrose won't want to see reruns of this goal. The Hibs defender waves a hand to team-mate Darren McGregor as if to say: 'doctor in the house, I've got this' near the halfway line. However, the bold Efe then coughs up possession to Gary Mackay-Steven and the winger needs no second invitation to thunder in on goal and clip home his second and Aberdeen's third of the opening 45 minutes.

Ambrose punches the Pittodrie turf in frustration. You'd imagine Neil Lennon might have a view back in the dressing room.

  3. Aberdeen 2-0 Hibernianpublished at 42 mins

If Hibernian are to force their way back into this game then they'll need to sharpen up their deliveries into the box. John McGinn, wide on the right, whips a free kick into the box but straight into the grateful arms of Joe Lewis.

Aberdeen’s second comes slightly against the run of play. Hibs had benefited from the change of shape and were battling back into the game. But Mackay-Steven, who’s looked in the mood this afternoon, showed great determination to get the shot away and got the reward.

  5. Dons rampantpublished at 40 mins

    Aberdeen 2-0 Hibernian

Dust down the old 'training ground routine' description. Anthony O'Connor sends a pitching wedge type corner to the edge of the area for the waiting Kenny McLean. The latter winds up for a shot but it flashes wide.

It was more determination than skill that has got him that goal. He really battled his way through to create the opening

  7. goal

GOAL Aberdeen 2-0 Hibernianpublished at 35 mins

    Gary Mackay-Steven

The blood-letting continues at Pittodrie. Andrew Considine plays a short ball into the feet of Gary Mackay-Steven and the winger nutmegs Hibs defender Darren McGregor. He's then coolness personified as he picks his spot, via the near post, to double Aberdeen's advantage. Brilliant goal; comedy defending.

Hibernian's defenders continue to bear gifts in the festive season.

  8. Aberdeen 1-0 Hibernianpublished at 32 mins

Graeme Shinnie rampages forward before letting fly from 30 yards but Ofir Marciano gets down in installments to smother the ball. Shinnie had acres of space as he thundered into Hibernian territory.

  9. Aberdeen 1-0 Hibernianpublished at 30 mins

Aberdeen are temporarily down to 10 men as Gary Mackay-Steven receives treatment for a cut lip; Hibs fail to profit from a corner.

Dylan McGeouch then tumbles under Adam Rooney's challenge, before Darren McGregor heads wide inside the area when he really should be hitting the target.

    It's all happening!

  10. Tactical change?published at 28 mins

    Aberdeen 1-0 Hibernian

Hibs manager Neil Lennon signals a change of shape, calling for a midfield diamond. Brandon Barker will move central and join striker Simon Murray.

The two-winger strategy certainly wasn't causing the home defence too many problems.

  11. Hibs 'need to be patient'published at 12:59

    Aberdeen 1-0 Hibernian

Former Hibs defender Craig Paterson on BBC Radio Scotland: "It looks like Kenny McLean has been singled out to stay close to John McGinn. When McGinn gets the ball, he is trying to play that killer 40-yard pass, but he needs to be patient. There is a long way to go. Hibs need to get their passing game going."

  12. Aberdeen 1-0 Hibernianpublished at 26 mins

Shay Logan pressures Darren McGregor but fails to get a clean connection on his strike. Up the other end, Brandon Barker fires in a 25-yard shot but Dons keeper Joe Lewis gathers comfortably.

    Aberdeen 1-0 Hibernian

    Alasdair Lamont
    BBC Sport Scotland at Pittodrie

The Hibernian manager Neil Lennon is not at all happy down on the touchline with the way his side are performing. Having praised their recent performances, he was looking for more of the same. But after a slow start, Aberdeen have really taken command of the game.

  15. Aberdeen 1-0 Hibernianpublished at 19 mins

Ryan Christie whips in a cross following more good work from Gary Mackay-Steven. However, the Hibs defence just about survive by putting bodies - including Darren McGregor's - on the line to blunt the Dons' attack.

Aberdeen have the scent of goals in their nostrils here. Can Neil Lennon do something to change it? Following a bright early start, the Edinburgh side are pinned in their own half.

  16. The real Mackay?published at 17 mins

    Aberdeen 1-0 Hibernian

Gary Mackay-Steven is a winger in the mood. The Dons wide man does his best to recreate the famous John Barnes in the Maracana dribble and goal but sees the ball whipped away from him on the edge of the area.

Derek McInnes must be purring in the dugout.

  17. Aberdeen 1-0 Hibernianpublished at 16 mins

Here come Aberdeen again... Gary Mackay-Steven threads the ball through to goalscorer Graeme Shinnie but his angled cross is too heavy for the red shirts inside the box. Seconds later and Stevie May lashes a shot high over the bar; Hibs are struggling to stem the red tide.

  18. Aberdeen 1-0 Hibernianpublished at 14 mins

Emboldened by Graeme Shinnie's opener, the Dons come surging forward in search of a second but Ryan Christie can't find Stevie May.

  19. Captain Cool opens the scoringpublished at 12:44

    Aberdeen 1-0 Hibernian

It's a fabulous piece of team play and a very cool finish from Shinnie. But it should never have happened. Marciano should have picked the ball up in his own box but instead he kicked it into touch, and Aberdeen score from that.

  20. goal

Just like that, the Dons break the deadlock. Kenny McLean's long pass finds Gary Mackay-Steven wide on the left, the winger arrows a great ball back across goal and Graeme Shinnie is there to steer a superb shot home.
