Stoke manager Paul Lambert on his return to management: "I will have nerves as normal on Saturday but as soon as the whistle blows they will disappear. I'm looking forward to it because I know it will be a great atmosphere.

"I've not had time to sleep just yet because everything has been go, go, go but I'm really enjoying it.

"I managed against Huddersfield Town last season and David Wagner has assembled a good team. We know it will be a tough game but we will be going out to win, just like in every match."

  3. 'Grizzly, grey and grim'published at 13:59 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

Burnley v Man Utd (15:00 GMT)

It’s a full press box at Turf Moor for Manchester United. It’s the second meeting of the clubs in a matter of weeks!

It’s a been a while since Burnley have been back at the Turf having had four games on the road since Christmas but they still find themselves in a good position in the league even if the weather isn’t as welcoming. Grizzly, grey and grim.

Alexis Sanchez t-shirts in a big clearance sale on the way to the Emirates Stadium but the chap selling them told me he hasn’t really had any takers for Sanchez merchandise all season. Even less likely today I reckon.

Saying that, Sanchez was the man who won the game for Arsenal against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on the 28th December with two second-half goals in their 3-2 victory, they’ve played five times since then and not won including, last Sunday’s defeat at Bournemouth.

Palace arrive five points clear of the bottom three with just one defeat in their last 12 Premier League games and it’s a battle of the wise old owls on the touchline today - 68-year-old Arsene Wenger versus 70-year-old Roy Hodgson. Experience is everything.

There’s no mention of Alexis Sanchez in Arsene Wenger’s programme notes as his move is yet to go through but the Arsenal manager is effusive in his praise of Theo Walcott who left for Everton this week after 12 years at the club.

“Personally I’m very attached to him because he is a person who is intelligent, has complete integrity, total commitment and focus on his job. He was also a mental and moral leader in the dressing room and he’s a big loss on that front as well.”

Wenger also describes last Sunday’s defeat at Bournemouth as “baffling” and says “I’m concerned about the fact that when it matters we are not dangerous enough and we are not sound enough at the back.”

  8. 'Team issue for Paul Lambert'published at 13:53 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Stoke v Huddersfield (15.00 GMT)

    Jermaine Jenas
Former Tottenham midfielder on Football Focus

They invested in the summer in two defensive players - Kurt Zouma and Kevin Wimmer - so they highlighted the defensive problem in the off season, but when you look at them against Manchester United on Monday night I think it's a team issue. It's not just individual errors, they need to be much harder to beat.

Theo Walcott probably should have left Arsenal two years ago. He’s gone a bit stale and some players do need that move to reignite their career. He will inject some pace into an Everton side which has lacked a bit of speed and his runs should be perfect for Sigurdsson and Rooney to pick out. I think it's a good move all round.

Paul Pogba is on fire. He is at his best when he is given that freedom to play.

I thought Stoke were pretty poor defensively on Monday, although they created a couple of chances, but you cannot take away the impact Pogba had. It is as plain as day. Everyone plays better when he plays.

Theo Walcott at Everton works in my mind. He has players like Rooney and Sigurdsson who can pick him out when he makes those late runs in from the right, which is his best position. He can push the opposition the other way.

  12. 'We're in a relegation battle'published at 13:48 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

Arsenal v Crystal Palace (15:00 GMT)

    Crystal Palace

    Crystal PalaceImage source, PA

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson: "The fact is we're still in a relegation battle. We're not alone now, we're a little bit less isolated than we were some weeks and months ago and we're happy, of course, about that.

"But we're still in a bigger group of teams now who must be aware that unless they can keep their form going, unless they can keep points coming in, unless they can keep performances at the very highest level, they're going to be involved in a scrap to stay in the league right to the end."

But the Eagles are in decent form, and have not lost away in the league in five...

  14. Reasons to be cheerful?published at 13:42 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

    Stoke v Huddersfield (15:00 GMT)

    Conor McNamara
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

Stoke created several chances at Old Trafford on Monday. Stephen Ireland put two shots wide, showing an expected rustiness in his first Premier League start in almost 1,000 days. Xherdan Shaqiri saw a near-perfect shot miraculously saved by De Gea.

Although they lost 3-0, there was actually much for new boss Paul Lambert to be positive about in an attacking sense. Defence, however, is a very different matter.

Stoke have been as flimsy as a wet paper bag and have now conceded the most goals in Europe's top five leagues.

Huddersfield are looking for their first win in six to maintain a cushion above the relegation zone.

  15. Bring a legend alive?published at 13:41 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

Burnley v Man Utd (15:00 GMT)

    Jonathan Pearce
BBC Match of the Day commentator

The first half of Burnley's season was absolutely extraordinary. Their fans must never forget that.

Their current seven-game run winless is largely down to the high intensity shown to mid-December. It would have been impossible to maintain that with a small squad.

If they lose this, it'll be four defeats in a row for the first time since May 2015. There'll be fire in their bellies because it's United and they have a good record against them.

But Jose Mourinho knows a win will bring a legend alive. Exactly 22 years ago, United were 12 points behind leaders Newcastle , externalwith 23 games played but they still won the title. They're now 12 points behind Manchester City after 23 Premier League games. Impossible?

  16. Back to actual football for Arsenal...published at 13:40 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2018

Arsenal v Crystal Palace (15:00 GMT)

    Steve Wilson
    Match of the Day commentator

Almost the last thing Arsenal fans have been thinking about this week is actual football. It's all been about Sanchez, Mikhitaryan and Aubameyang, and who would have thought that Theo Walcott leaving would barely generate a headline?

Anyway, the 'actual football' has not been going too well for Arsenal, so perhaps it's as well not to dwell on that.

Roy Hodgson is two years older than Arsene Wenger, but whilst some Gunners' fans think their boss is past his best, Palace supporters are wishing eternal youth on Hodgson.

The man discarded by England (fair enough) and ridiculed (not fair enough) after Euro 2016, has the kind of spring in his step and twinkle in his eye which Wenger seems to have lost long ago.

    Paul LambertImage source, PA

It’s a big chance for Lambert but he’s almost grateful to be given this chance after what happened at Villa and Wolves. He’s got the pedigree and experience to be successful but he has to learn from the mistakes he made at Villa. He had good players there and a high budget but it didn’t work out. It’s a similar situation at Stoke for him.

Paul Lambert last managed a Premier League game in February 2015, when a 2-0 defeat at Hull pushed his Aston Villa side closer to the drop.

Few would have imagined he would be pulling up a chair at football's top table this season. But he's here, and a win today would really raise the spirits in the five towns.
