As a supporter of Coventry I knew that even in some of their less successful teams if the ball went up to Cyrille Regis it would stick and something positive would happen...often a class act in a struggling team. 86/87 was different though and he was icing on the cake in what was a good team, they’d have finished higher up the league if they hadn’t focused on the Cup. I was at Hillsborough for a 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday, a game remembered for Coventry keeper Steve Ogrizovic scoring Coventry’s 2nd goal. The first goal is the one I remember. It was classic Cyrille, leaving the Wednesday defence behind from the halfway line. He was ahead of his time in terms of his physique, power and pace. I only knew the man as a footballer to watch. It’s tough to take when you read what a quality bloke he was. RIP Cyrille & thanks for the memories.

    John, Leeds.

Dave: What.A.Game!! A 7-goal thriller ends City’s unbeaten start. And finally some good news for Arsenal, they will remain the last side to be unbeaten throughout the season!

Amar Subhedar: Can't really call the #LiverpoolFC and #ManchesterCity match a classic. No doubt it was entertaining but it was the mistakes by both defenses that made it a fun game.

  5. Can Giggs get players to turn up for friendlies?published at 12:38 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2018

Ryan Giggs is set to be announced as the new manager of Wales at a news conference this afternoon.

You'll be able to watch the FAW's news conference in this page from around 14:00 GMT.

Giggs developed a bit of a reputation for pulling out of international friendlies when he was a player and Alan Shearer has joked he might struggle to get Wales players to turn up for friendlies.

As a child of the 80’s he was my hero - worshipped by the Brummie Road and respected throughout. Would love the club to arrange a permanent dedication and reminder for the future of what this man meant to WBA and to the progress of equality in football, RIP

Lambert? Bye Stoke, Wish I had known stoke were so desperate, I would have thrown my hat in to the ring.

  7. Giggs set for Wales jobpublished at 12:27 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2018

More on Ryan Giggs now and Wales.....

Giggs has long been a target for the FAW and was one of the favourites for the role once Chris Coleman left after Wales failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

He won 64 caps between 1991 and 2007 and captained his country - but he was criticised for regularly pulling out of squads and especially for missing friendly matches.

The Manchester United great was in caretaker charge of the Red Devils for four games at the end of the 2013-14 season following the sacking of David Moyes.

He spent the next two seasons as Louis van Gaal's assistant but left after Jose Mourinho was appointed manager at Old Trafford.

Giggs lost out on the Swansea job to Bob Bradley after being interviewed for the manager's role at the Liberty Stadium in October 2016.

On pulling out of friendlies - is that a big deal? Will it affect Giggs' credibility if he's ever in a position where he's left questioning a player's availability?

  8. Paul Lambert's Premier League recordpublished at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2018

#bbcfootball or text 81111 (UK only)

I'm not sure if this will put Stoke fans' minds at rest or not, but here goes.

At Norwich City, across 38 Premier League games, he amassed 47 points, or 1.24 points per game.

At Aston Villa, across 101 Premier League games, he won 101 points - one point per game.

Stoke City currently have 20 points from 22 games, so if Lambert reached his Villa average between now and the end of the season they would finish with 36 points.

If he replicates his Norwich City career they would finish with 41.84 points, which I'll round up to 42.

Feeling confident Stoke fans? My head hurts now.....

James Mutch: It’s amazing that Paul Lambert can consistently fail at clubs and still manage to get big jobs! Why can’t teams in the Prem ever give some new managers a chance instead of keeping with the same group that will only get the sack in 6 months time?

Nic Leung Lik Yan: Paul Lambert!? Well, that escalated quickly.

Nice Anchorman reference...Is anybody out there positive about Paul Lambert and Stoke City?

  11. 'Kick' Ref is suspendedpublished at 12:07 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2018

The referee who aimed a kick at a Nantes player before sending him off in a game against Paris St-Germain has been suspended "until further notice" by the French Football Association.

As PSG broke into the Nantes penalty area, defender Diego Carlos clipped referee Tony Chapron's heels in what appeared to be an accident.

Chapron kicked out at the player and then booked him for a second time, apparently for dissent, in injury time.

Ryan Giggs is set to be named the new Wales manager on a four-year contract.

The Football Association of Wales has called a news conference for this afternoon in Cardiff, where the former Manchester United winger is expected to be introduced.

Provided there is no late hitch, Giggs will be announced as the successor to Chris Coleman, who left for Sunderland in November.

Craig Bellamy, Osian Roberts and Mark Bowen were also interviewed.

What do you think - is he the right choice?

“We were determined to appoint someone with Premier League experience or an extensive knowledge of English football. We look forward to working with Paul and supporting him to help achieve our goals.”

  20. West Brom plan to celebrate the life of Regispublished at 11:29 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2018

    West Bromwich Albion

More from that West Brom statement now:

The Club has been in constant touch with Cyrille’s family who have asked us to relay this statement on their behalf.

His widow, Julia, said today: “Cyrille and I were soulmates, he was the perfect man for me and we had a wonderful life together.

“He was a beautiful man and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather brother and uncle.

“Losing him has turned my whole world upside down. It is a void that will never be filled.

“I have been moved by the many messages of support and condolences I have received and the kind things people have said about Cyrille as a person and a professional.

“He came into football the hard way and never lost his passion for the game. He was a role model for so many because he always treated everyone he met with kindness and respect.”

The Club will be presenting full tributes shortly and Chairman John Williams said: “This is terribly shocking and upsetting news and our thoughts and condolences are with Cyrille’s family.

“We also know Cyrille’s passing will be felt deeply among all our supporters for whom he was the ultimate hero - a wonderful, exciting centre-forward who remained in close contact with the Club beyond his playing days.

“Everyone will have their precious memories of him as a family man, as a crusader against bigotry - which can never be under-estimated - and as a man who threw considerable energy into a series of worthy causes.

“But for me, I will never forget Cyrille the footballer - a wonderful, wonderful player who had everything and who defenders of the time would have hated facing.

“He will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, Cyrille.”

The Club will be making further announcements about its plans to celebrate the life of one of Albion's all-time greats in due course.
