Barnie: With these substitutes on the bench, it could be a tiring afternoon for Saints fans if they boo every time an ex-Southampton player touches the ball.

Anon: Southampton's main issue is the lack of passion and character of the current team. Performances like this would not have been seen from former players like Brett Ormerod.

  2. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 26 mins

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Roberto Firmino flings himself to the floor inside the Southampton area. It's unnecessarily dramatic but he did have an arm around his neck just before as he tried to turn with the ball. He may have had a decent shout for a penalty, but his dramatic fall will have made the referee's mind up not to give one.

Joel Matip slices a clearance out for a throw - how Southampton fans would have loved for Virgil van Dijk to have done that - Liverpool making mistakes now which will give the home side encouragement.

Javel: That result HAS to give Liverpool a lift!

Amar: At this rate Man City will win the league in the Manchester Derby or even worse Man Utd will have to give them a guard of honour.

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Big chance for Southampton to equalise!

Oriol Romeu's ball to the far post finds Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who shoots but Loris Karius does well to push the ball away.

Liverpool's defence caught out on that occasion.

    Mark Schwarzer
Ex-Chelsea keeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Mohamed Salah has been good, but’s not like he’s making incredible runs or anything but he’s still getting the ball.

He hasn’t even got going yet, they've just made too easy for him.

Then Dusan Tadic scampers away down the left but is flagged offside. There are gaps in that Liverpool defence for Southampton to exploit if they are brave enough.

Joshua: Man, Southampton need a pre-recorded "booing" device, because half that team used to play for them.

Better spell for Southampton as Guido Carrillo's smart backheel almost runs through for Dusan Tadic inside the box. The Saints keep up the attack until Jack Stephens sweeps wide from distance.

  12. 'It was an amazing game'published at 16:45 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2018

    Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd

Martin Dubravka, the Newcastle United goalkeeper speaking to BBC MOTD:

"It was an amazing game. It was important for us that we got the three points. Everybody is super happy. I tried to focus on the game and just think about helping the team in critical situations."

Permanent move from Sparta Prague after the loan:

"Let's see what happens in the summer. I'm trying to show people that I deserve to be here."

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Southampton have now made nine errors leading to goals, only Arsenal have made more. More boos for Virgil van Dijk but they perhaps do the job of unsettling the defender as he sends Joel Matip scampering for a fairly routine pass.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho speaking to Guy Mowbray, MOTD:

"My verdict is that we could've been here for 10 hours and not scored a goal. Newcastle played with their lives and defended with their lives.

"They got from us a defensive mistake and from a lateral free-kick they scored. The gods of football were clearly in their side. They must have an amazing feeling after giving absolutely everything."

    What was missing?

"Score a goal. We had some [chances] with the score at 0-0. Alexis [Sanchez] had an open goal and then the countless opportunities of the last 20-25 minutes. The double [miss] of Martial is incredible in the last minute."

    Chris Smalling dive:

"A defender has to concede free-kicks now and again. It was an intuitive thing. Players [who do it] in the box deserve a card more than [Chris] Smalling in that situation. Clearly I know we lost the duel in the air and it's difficult to accept that."

Anon: I'm a bit concerned that Yoshida is on the bench yet again today! He really offers something different in the opposition box as well, get him on before it's too late I say!

Pantomime boos for Virgil van Dijk as he plays the ball back to his goalkeeper. Giving their former player a bit of stick might be as good as it gets for Southampton fans today. Their side is really struggling at the moment.

  17. 'Dreadful defending'published at 16:40 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2018

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

    Mark Schwarzer
Ex-Chelsea keeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

The goal has come from nothing, just a long ball up. Really poor defending. the signs were coming. Wesley Hoedt completely missed the ball, Mohamed Salah gets in behind, simple square pass simple finish, Alex McCarthy had no chance.

Can't allow a team of this quality to have two good opportunities.

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Liverpool players are lining up to shoot as Southampton's defence runs scared.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is the latest to have a pop but his effort has the sting taken out of it by a Saints player and Alex McCarthy gathers.

  19. 'We showed character'published at 16:37 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2018

    Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd

    Newcastle United

    DubravkaImage source, Getty Images

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez speaking to Sky Sports:

On today's victory: "We worked as hard as other games, but against a team like Manchester United every ball is important, they can punish you, so you work like them. Amazing effort.

"They are dangerous, but the teamwork we showed to fight for every ball was amazing. I am pleased for the players and the fans. Because we won here at home.

"We had games in past when conceded late. We got lucky with some shots, but we showed the character, the commitment and the desire today."

On Martin Dubravka's debut: "He can buy the lottery and win today. He was composed and that gave confidence to the team. All the players worked hard, so it is not fair to say just the goalkeeper played well."

On Jonjo Shelvey's performance: "Jonjo showed quality on the ball. He is learning, and if he can make the right decisions he will be a very good player."
