David Thomas: After all the disappointment of last night, Arsenal get Aubameyang and Ozil extends his contract. All fantastic, but a solid centre-back is essential.

Geoff Russell: Fantastic news about Ozil's contract extension, he is a flawed genius on the pitch, but at least he is our flawed genius.

Andreas: Arsenal came into this window with our best two players nearly out of contract with the chance to leave for very little. we have kept one of them and signed a world class forward and midfielder to replace the other. Very, very good outcome from a dire situation.

  3. Aubameyang - 'I'm really happy to be here'published at 14:23 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2018

Pierre-Emerick Aubmeyang has given his first interview, following his arrival at Arsenal for £56m from Borussia Dortmund.

"I’m really happy to be here. Of course I can join Micki [Henrikh Mkhitaryan] in this team, so I’m really happy to be here in this great team," he said.

"I think the club has such a big history and great players like Thierry Henry. He's an example for us strikers. I’m really happy, like I said before.

"I’m a fast player and I score goals too, like Henry a little bit. But as I said, I have to work a lot more."

  4. Celtic close to completing some deadline day businesspublished at 14:22 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2018

    Chris McLaughlin
    BBC Sport Scotland

Celtic are close to agreeing terms with Dundee for their defender Jack Hendry. The Scottish champions are also still working on a deal to secure the services of Dundee goalkeeper Scott Bain who is on loan at Hibs. The deal should go ahead if Celtic’s midfielder Scott Allan moves to Hibs – he’s currently on loan at Dundee. Get all that?

  6. Williams swaps Fulham for St Johnstonepublished at 14:18 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2018

Some cross-border activity. St Johnstone have completed the loan signing of George Williams from Fulham. The 22-year-old winger has seven Wales caps and has made 17 appearances for Fulham on top of other first-team experience at MK Dons and Gillingham.

  7. Klaassen going nowhere?published at 14:15 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2018

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

The proposed loan deal for Everton's Davy Klaassen to move to Napoli looks increasingly unlikely as the 24-year-old former Ajax captain - signed in a £24m summer deal by former manager Ronald Koeman - is in no rush to quit Goodison Park and switch to Serie A.

Everton are willing to offload the Netherlands midfield man and were happy to do the loan deal with Napoli after his struggles this season but at this stage - with hours left in the window - Klaassen is reluctant to leave.

  8. And still the wait goes on....published at 14:14 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2018

    Crystal Palace

Yet another transfer window approaches its end and still, Crystal Palace need a goalkeeper and a striker.

Ever since Connor Wickham was injured in November 2016, Christian Benteke has cast a lonely figure up top only for two windows to come and go without the club adding an able partner for the Belgium international.

That being said, our record of signing strikers in January has been atrocious.

Kevin Doyle, Yaya Sanogo and Emmanuel Adebayor have all been winter window flops in recent years.

The supposedly incoming Alexander Sørloth will hopefully buck this trend, but alone he may not be enough. With Bakary Sako picking up a long-term injury at West Ham last night, we still look light up front.

Wickham was injured in the dramatic 5-4 loss at Swansea fourteen months ago and the ‘Swansea five’ in that match is one of the many reasons why we need to add a new goalkeeper.

Vicente Guaita has been heavily linked with a move to London and his record of conceding just a goal a game for the newly promoted Getafe looks extremely impressive on paper.

Unsurprisingly, the Spanish outfit are keen to retain his services, but I remain hopeful that the transfer can be sorted by tomorrow night.

  10. Spending = improvement?published at 14:05 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2018

Crystal Palace spent £30m in the January 2017 window after appointing Sam Allardyce their new manager shortly beforehand. He led them from 17th position to 14th by the end of the season.

However, Sunderland and Middlesbrough spent around £24m between them in January 2017 and still got relegated, but then neither club changed its manager in sufficient time for it to take effect.

Spending in the January transfer window can have a positive influence on a club's league position but it's not a simple case of spending money on anyone - it has to be targeted. It is true that the evidence suggests the most successful clubs with the most money do often outperform their rivals, but the trade-off between financial and sporting performance is hazardous and spending beyond your means can result in financial failure.

Swansea City found themselves in exactly the same position as they were on New Years Day 2017 – bottom of the table. Two days later, they appointed a new manager and spent £18m on new transfers. These two decisions helped them to a 15th place finish and safety, a position that equated to £9.7m in extra revenue for the club. Even more importantly, by avoiding relegation they retained about £60m in TV money.

League Two leaders Luton Town have signed Liverpool defender Lloyd Jones for an undisclosed fee.

Jones, who joined Liverpool from Plymouth in 2011, has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at Kenilworth Road.

The 22-year-old failed to make a first-team appearance for the Reds, but has featured on loan at Cheltenham, Accrington, Blackpool and Swindon.

Luton Town's sought-after young defender James Justin won't be allowed to leave the club unless his valuation is met (probably over £1m) and he's loaned back to Luton for the rest of the season. The right back is reportedly interesting Premier League sides. Meanwhile the Hatters are keen on Liverpool defender Lloyd Jones.

Stevenage young prized assets Ben Wilmot, Mark McKee and Ben Kennedy will also be in demand. Chairman Phil Wallace has said he's already turned down a number of approaches for his star players.

  19. Davenport joins Burtonpublished at 13:42 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2018

    Manchester City

Burton Albion have signed 19-year-old midfielder Jacob Davenport on loan from Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Davenport has joined the struggling Championship side on a deal until the end of the season.

He has made two appearances for the under-21s side in the EFL Trophy but has yet to play for City's first team.

"He's highly rated by Pep Guardiola [City boss] and you won't get a better endorsement than that," said Brewers boss Nigel Clough.
