    Earlier this morning (08:07), I linked to a story in The Sun, external which said that Crystal Palace had agreed an £8m fee with Preston for striker Jordan Hugill.

    The Championship side, though, have released a statement on the matter.

    The club said: "Despite wholly inaccurate reports in a national newspaper this morning, we have not agreed any transfer fee with any club for Jordan Hugill.

    "Jordan remains a contracted player to Preston North End Football Club."

    OK we are back in business.

    Aymeric Laporte joins Manchester City from Athletic Bilbao for a club-record £57m fee as Pep Guardiola, external’s sixth signing of the 2017-18 season and has signed a deal until 2023.

    Regarded as one of the most promising young defenders in Europe, the 23-year-old will take the number 14 shirt.

    “I am very happy to be here,” said Laporte. “City are a club with a lot of ambition and they are one of the best teams in Europe.

    “I am looking forward to working under Pep Guardiola and trying to help the club to achieve success.

    “It means a lot that the club have shown faith in me and I am excited to get started.”
