Ash Green: Got to take issue with this: ‘I do not think anyone would have predicted such a result before the game’ - I did optimistically say 4-1 to the Villa... Dare to dream!

It was a wonderful display by Villa and a deserved win. It's going to be some race for those top two places in the Championship.

Aston Villa goalscorer James Chester told Sky Sports:

"I thought it was a really good game.

"They caused us some problems in the first half but we got to grips with it at half-time and in the second half there was only one team who was going to win it.

"It's night and day from last season.

"We really struggled from being relegated, there was an expectation that we'd come straight back up with the money we spent.

"But since the gaffer's come in he's got together a really good squad."

  4. All-important league tablepublished at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 10 March 2018

It's getting very interesting at the top of the Championship after that defeat for Wolves, with Cardiff just three points behind the leaders.

Aston Villa meanwhile return to third place and remain in the hunt for an automatic promotion spot.

At the other end it's the same old story for most of the strugglers, though Reading, Bolton and Burton did all at least manage draws.

The big move saw Hull rise to 18th thanks to their extraordinary 4-3 triumph over Norwich.

A huge result at the top end of the Championship.

Wolves remain top, but are just three points clear.

    Aston Villa 4-1 Wolves

I do not think anyone would have predicted such a result before the game.

Villa have been the better side in this second half, but I'm not sure Wolves have been three goals worse.

As it stands Villa move up above Fulham into third in the Championship, four points behind second-placed Cardiff and seven off Wolves who are still clear at the top.

Cardiff visit Villa Park on 10 April in what could be a huge game in the race for promotion to the Premier League.

That sums the second half up, in that Villa have wanted it more. Villa have really wanted it and Wolves have gone through the motions. Villa have thoroughly deserved it.

    Aston Villa 3-1 Wolves

It's been a long time since Wolves last conceded three goals in any competition, which is testament to how well Villa have played tonight.

Bristol City were the last team to do it in September, but even then Nuno Espirito Santo's side came away with a 3-3 draw.

You have to go back to April 2017 for the last time Wolves conceded three in a game and lost - a 3-1 defeat at Derby.

Penalty? Helder Costa's free kick hits the arm of Robert Snodgrass, who jumps as part of a two-man Villa wall in the area.

It happened quickly, but replays show it should have been a penalty.

Villa got away with one there.

    Aston Villa 3-1 Wolves

    BBC Sport at Villa Park

It's all gone very quiet in the Wolves' fans' corner of Villa Park after those two Villa goals in the space of five minutes.

The visitors do look rattled, as the two cautions after desperate challenges from Alfred N'Diaye and Conor Coady have shown.

But it would be foolish to write off Nuno's men. There's a good reason why they have been Championship leaders for most of the season. This is not all over!
