Seen by some – including this hapless football writer – as an outside bet for a top six place this season, Brentford’s chances of a play-off berth are looking rather slim.

After three defeats in their past four games, the Bees are nine points behind sixth-placed Middlesbrough with nine games to go.

Victory today would give the West London side a little more hope, but they find themselves up against one of the best sides in the division on current form, with Middlesbrough taking four wins and a draw from their past five games.

  2. Monk praying for a turnaroundpublished at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2018

    Birmingham v Hull (15:00 GMT)

Leeds fans may disagree, but it’s hard not to have a bit of sympathy for Garry Monk.

Having been dismissed by promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough in December, Monk was appointed manager of a Blues side sitting two points adrift of safety following the sacking of Steve Cotterill.

After defeats in his two first games in charge, Monk is fighting a lack of confidence in the dressing room as well as a lack of results on the pitch.

“As long as you're in the bottom three, you're already 1-0 down. Adversity is against you before you step on the pitch so we have to be going at it from the very first second," he told BBC WM.

"It all comes down to hard work and commitment, but you also need things to go your way."

With the early fixtures causing a slightly truncated build-up to the 15:00 games, we can’t take you through all of the afternoon’s team-news.

Instead, you’ll have to get by with just a few of the biggest ins and outs below.

    • Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Sam Hutchinson makes his first appearance since 30 December for Sheffield Wednesday, who make three changes to face Leeds.
    • Leeds give a debut to 19-year-old left-back Tom Pearce with Laurens de Bock out injured, while star winger Samuel Saiz misses out with a hamstring problem.
    • Brentford make four changes for the visit of Middlesbrough, with midfielder Lewis Macleod making his first league start of the season.
    • Chris Maxwell starts in goal for Preston, as Declan Rudd is absent to witness the birth of his second child.
    • Abel Hernandez returns up front for Hull after being rested for the 3-0 win at Ipswich.
