Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho on Paul Pogba: "I think Paul made a big effort to try to give the team what I asked of him. Paul replaced Ander, he tried to bring to the game the same kind of qualities. He lost a couple of possessions but he also gave us stability because we had a good percentage of possession for the way we played.

"I am also happy with Matic, so I think the three midfield players had a good game and Paul was part of it."

On Ander Herrera:"He had a small injury that stopped him for the last couple of matches. The medical department gave him 100% ready for last Saturday. We didn’t play him to give more work and more protection but it looks like he was not fully fit.

"The medical department gave him fully fit. He trained Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. He looked fit, the way he was playing during the time on the pitch he showed that intensity that is only possible when you feel fully fit."

Alan: Who remembers 0-0 at Barcelona and 0-0 at Marseille? Fergie did the same. We reached finals in both seasons. It’s an awful performance, but a positive result. Old Trafford has to be vociferous against Sevilla.

Scott: I don't understand all the negative comments about Mourinho. United have taken years to get back to the Champions League knockout phase. Let the man work, we won the Champions League with Porto!

  4. Sevilla boss happy with performancepublished at 22:17 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

    Sevilla 0-0 Man Utd

Sevilla boss Vincenzo Montella said: “I am extremely pleased with how we’ve played against a top team like Manchester United."

  5. Clean sheet kingspublished at 22:13 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

    Sevilla 0-0 Man Utd

Some people think I've been a bit negative tonight, so here's a positive...

This was Manchester United’s ninth clean sheet in their last 11 matches in all competitions and their 23rd in all competitions this season – three more than any other Premier League side.

  6. Postpublished at 22:11 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

    Sevilla 0-0 Man Utd

David de Gea has made eight saves against Sevilla, the most for a Manchester United goalkeeper in a Champions League game since Edwin van der Sar vs Barcelona in May 2011 (also eight).

  7. Herrera could be set for lay-offpublished at 22:10 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

    Sevilla 0-0 Man Utd

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says Ander Herrera was not fully fit despite the medical department telling him he was 100% ready last Saturday.

He thinks the Spanish midfielder might have suffered a bad injury.

Karl: It's not good enough nicking a win in 2 weeks time with the players we have. So much potential going to waste. Dreaming to think we'll play attacking football in the home leg, it'll be more of the same.

Femi: Jose Mourinho is no longer special and Man United are not any better from the last few seasons.

Bob: I have spent a lifetime watching and loving Champions League, but this was the worst Champions League match I have ever seen.

  9. 'Can I hug you?'published at 22:07 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

    Sevilla 0-0 Man Utd

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho was happy to be asked about Scott McTominay's performance by BT Sport.

"Can I hug you?" Mourinho asked before doing just that.

"In the press conference, the questions were about Paul [Pogba] but the question should be about the kid. He was fantastic. He did everything well. He put pressure on Ever Banega and stopped him playing, he's their playmaker. I think Scott was brilliant.

"The midfield started really well and Paul made a big effort to go into the dynamic when he came on and he had a positive performance."

  10. 'Old Trafford has missed big European night'published at 22:04 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

    Sevilla 0-0 Man Utd

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho told BT Sport: "If we draw with goals in the second leg, we are out. If we win, we are through.

"It’s difficult. I believe that Old Trafford misses a big European night. We had the quarter-finals and semi-finals last year but the Europa League has a different meaning."

I think Jose Mourinho was more worried about Sevilla than Sevilla were of Manchester United, and that is a statement in itself.

Five of Manchester United’s last seven Champions League away matches in Spain have ended goalless.

English sides are unbeaten in all eight meetings with Spanish teams in the Champions League so far this season (W2 D6).

Anon: I think the results of tonight's game are a good tactical strategy from Jose Mourinho and I think that Manchester United have it in them to carry on in their search for silverware and Champions League progression ! I also think we would be a total different team without De Gea in team

Adam: I wish everyone would stop mis-remembering the Ferguson era in Europe. Fans sat through an awful lot of drab draws and disappointing results every year. It wasn't the 7-1 against Roma every week you know!

  14. Man Utd 'nowhere near past sides'published at 21:54 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

    Ian Wright
Former Arsenal & England striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Jose Mourinho talked about experts in football. You don’t have to be an expert for anyone involved with English football in the past 25 years to know that this team is nowhere near those past sides.

Not that they can replicate them, but there is a certain way you have to play. I didn’t think they would come to Sevilla, not exactly renowned for scoring goals, and play this badly

Kunal Gupta: You could sign Messi and Neymar and they couldn’t bring this United team to life. It’s soul crushingly dull. Mou has got to sort it out - this whole backs to the wall mentality and 0 flair is not the United way.

Ricky Lee Everett: Where are Manchester United? Attack! Attack! Attack! Ian Wright used the word "disgusted" and to be honest he isn't far wrong.

Karl Bristow: Martial has gone backwards, Rashford has gone backwards, Shaw not allowed to flourish, boring football every week. This is the Mourinho way. Tiresome

I do think this same squad would play better under a different manager. When you employ Mourinho, you know what you’re going to get. It brings trophies though, so what you do you want?

He will say it is a good result and accentuate the performance. But it was dull. Players taking extra touches, there’s no movement.

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling on BT Sport: "It opened up in the second half. Bar the five minutes at the end of the first half, they didn’t have clear-cut chances.

"It’s in our hands at home. We have to win at them to go through. The atmosphere was very loud and emotional here and we had to dig in at times.

"They tired in the last 20 mins and we tried to pressure them. It was open in the second half."

  19. 'Pogba would be a different player under Guardiola'published at 21:42 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

Former England striker Ian Wright says Paul Pogba would be in a better frame of mind if he was playing his football for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

The Manchester United midfielder was dropped to the bench for the Champions League last-16 first-leg tie away to Sevilla, amidst rumours of breakdown in his relationship with manager Jose Mourinho.

Speaking before Pogba came off the bench, Wright says he understands fans being critical of Pogba’s recent form, but believes the Frenchman needs to be better managed.

Ian Wright says Paul Pogba would have a better mentality if he played for Pep Guardiola.
