  1. Glasgow good to Galloping Majorpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

    Scotland v Hungary (19:00)

We could talk all night about the magnificent Puskas. One of the all-time greats.

The Galloping Major, as he was nicknamed, dazzled in the white of Real Madrid when scoring four at Hampden Park as Eintracht Frankfurt were demolished 7-3 in the 1960 European Cup final. Perhaps the greatest team display ever witnessed at the home of Scottish football?

There is another Glasgow connection, with former Rangers legend Jim Baxter telling a story of taking the great man to a house party in Drumchapel, where they enjoyed a few refreshments and a warm welcome from some female admirers.

  2. Hungary show the way at Wembleypublished at 18:31 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

    Hungary v Scotland (19:00)

Scotland supporters like to brag about victories at Wembley. Yes, there have been a few, with 1967's 3-2 success against the World Cup holders probably the pick of the bunch, while there was a glorious 5-1 back in 1928.

Hungary have good memories too, becoming the first foreign nation to beat England at their famous London home.

Puskas scored twice and Hidegkuti bagged a hat-trick as the visitors rang rings round a bewildered England to win 6-3 in 1953.

A return game in Budapest the following year was more emphatic, with Puskas again scoring twice in a 7-1 rout.

  3. Hungary hark back to 'Golden Squad'published at 18:29 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

    Hungary v Scotland (19:00)

Scotland fans are fond of misty-eyed nostalgia but Hungary have us beaten all ends up when it comes to past achievements overshadowing the present.

However, there is a great deal of hurt mixed with pride when recalling the glory days of the famous 'Golden Squad'.

The Germans call the World Cup final of 1954 the 'Miracle of Bern'. What they call it in Hungary would shatter all manner of BBC guidelines...

It was meant to be the coronation for Ferenc Puskas, Sandor Kocsis, Nandor Hidegkuti, Zoltan Czibor, Jozsef Bozsik & co and everything was going to plan as Brazil and Uruguay were overcome in the quarters and semis without injured skipper Puskas.

The team's talisman returned for the final, despite a damaged ankle, and scored the opener as Hungary raced into a 2-0 lead after just eight minutes but a 36-game unbeaten run came to an end with Germany hitting back to avenge an 8-3 hammering in the group stage.

Some Twitter reaction to the starting line-up... @bbcsportscot

Richard Cobb: Don’t see the sense in playing McGregor in goals. He surely wont last the distance in the next qualifying campaign, so why not try McLaughlin?

George Drummond: So negative it’s unreal.

Greenday: Hendry is quality glad he's in the team.

  6. If Kazakhstan can do it...published at 18:18 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

    Hungary v Scotland (19:00)

Hungary hosted Costa Rica in November and managed a 1-0 victory but the mood in the home camp may be a little sour after Tuesday's 3-2 home defeat to Kazakhstan. The visitors raced into a 2-0 lead inside 10 minutes, which suggests a few defensive frailties.

For what it's worth, the Fifa rankings have Hungary in 50th place, with Scotland 32nd.

Kazakhstan are all the way down at 136th...

  9. McLeish calls on Celtic quartetpublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 27 March 2018

    Hungary v Scotland (19:00)

Alex McLeish makes wholesale changes from Friday, with only Allan McGregor, Charlie Mulgrew, Andy Robertson and Scott McKenna retaining their starting places.

There is a debut for Jack Hendry in defence and he is joined by Celtic team-mates James Forrest, Callum McGregor and Stuart Armstrong.

John McGinn adds bite to the midfield, while Matt Phillips is being deployed as a central striker and Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser makes his first start after two outings as a sub.

Hendry, 22, was a late call up to the squad and this time last year was kicking his heels at Wigan after a loan spell at MK Dons.
