I'm not sure what England fans really want, given we're playing a second-rate team who didn't qualify for the World Cup.

The bar isn't high. But we've always said we want to say England moving in the right direction, and they've done that tonight.

This team isn't playing outstanding, but they're trying to do the right thing and I think that is positive.

England straight on the front foot at the start of the second half, but a wayward final ball from Jesse Lingard is gratefully accepted by Dutch keeper Jereon Zoet.

England still full of energy in that midfield, Jordan Henderson snapping at the heels of Kevin Strootman in the home half.

The unexpected call of the night is Kyle Walker’s selection in central defence. He’s not looked out of place at all, has been comfortable in possession… and thus far this looks something that might be an option for England in Russia.

Gareth Southgate always talks of how he wants his team to play the ball quickly in possession and England did that increasingly as the first-half went on.

Thomas Lemar doubled the French advantage, but Sevilla striker Luis Muriel has immediately pulled one back for the Colombians.

But Raheem Sterling looks sharp, England have dominated possession, and they've looked better than the Netherlands.

This 45 minutes has gone quite quickly and I think it's been a positive performance. I'd be pleased with that if I was England manager.

So many times, we watch England games and say it's flat and there's no energy.

But tonight, they're sharp and trying to keep the ball as much as they can. This is an experimental side, but in terms of watchability, this has been one of the better games I've seen from England in some time.

David Wells: Encouraging but we need a Goal. Mistakes in defence will be punished in Russia.

Richard Twigg: Change something please Southgate. How are we learning anything from this?

Chrissy Mitch: There is zero creativity in this England midfield. You can see Lingard, Rashford and Sterling getting frustrated after making run after run and not getting the ball

Thus far, there has not been much to celebrate for Scotland in this match.

Scott McTominay has looked comfortable. Oli McBurnie has shown desire and energy. Beyond that? Not much at all. Andrew Robertson is beginning to look his usual threat down the left though.

It is difficult to fathom the overall lack of inspiration. Pre-match, Alex McLeish talked a very good game. His side have failed to match it.

Indeed it is. Memphis Depay's shot was the last action of a first half which will have pleased England boss Gareth Southgate more than it would have Dutch counterpart Ronald Koeman.

Sloppy from England at the end of this first half. Danny Rose lobs a throw-in at Harry Maguire's waist, he loses possession and the Dutch quickly play the ball up to Memphis Depay. He shoots straight at Jordan Pickford. And that should be that.

The fourth official joins the party, informing us that we will have three minutes of injury time at the end of this first half.

Not much happening to be honest. Gareth Southgate is leant so far back in his dugout seat that he looks like he should have a pina colada in his hand. Holiday pose.
