Southampton manager Mark Hughes: "It was an important day for the players today. I have been really impressed with the quality of the talent I have. They have lost a bit of confidence recently but they are good players. We stood up to Wigan. It was a statement of intent and a start. We have work to do in the Premier League, but we will enjoy this moment.

"We did not create enough in the first half, but we were resolute throughout and made the right decisions in the key moments."

Team news has arrived from the King Power Stadium... you know it's getting serious when all the big names are written down on the teamsheets.

Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, Eden Hazard, N'Golo Kante...

No major surprises for the Foxes as Kelechi Iheanacho and Marc Albrighton come back in, while Alvaro Morata starts up top for Chelsea.

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand speaking to BBC One: "The commitment and intensity has changed since the manager has come in. We have to apply that to our season. We competed and matched their aggressiveness and our quality came through.

"It is about learning a new system. We have two strikers up front and we don't want to starve them of the ball."

Mark: Saints dug out an ugly win, just what the doctor ordered! Major improvement needed to have a chance to stay up.

Lewis: Southampton much improved second half. Haven’t said that much this season. Good start for Hughes. Class told in the end. Well played Wigan. Cracking cup tie.

I suspect Mark Hughes asked his players a few questions at half time. They are the Premier League team but they weren’t showing it in the first half.

I've been in a lot of half-time team talks, and managers don’t always say a lot. But this was not down to Wigan doing less or anything Paul Cook did. It was everything to do with Southampton’s positivity in the second half.

Well done to Mark Hughes, well done to the team who probably in the end deserved to go through, and well done to those Southampton fans.

Southampton won 2-0.

But Wigan keeper Christian Walton produced the moment of the match with a penalty save from Manolo Gabbiadini.

The DW Stadium tannoy man is straight on the mic after the whistle, thanking the fans for their noise and asking for some final decibels for the players.

They deserve it and get it in spades.

Well done Latics.

There are four minutes of injury time on the board by the way.

Which would be a lot more interesting without that second Saints goal.

A real sucker punch. Wigan were trying to on push, and you have to do that, that is the right thing to do. Seconds before Hunt had a brilliant chance to score.

Within seconds Southampton break up the other side and what could and perhaps should have been another 30 minutes of football won't happen.

Noel Hunt! Nope!

His side-foot volley hangs in the air, but he had not got a solid enough connection and Jack Stephens diverts it over the top.

Southampton are getting on the ball and are proving frustratingly stubborn to shift for Wigan.

They have a throw-in deep in the hosts' half.

Mark Hughes makes a convenient mistake as he fields the ball in the Southampton dug-out, dropping it as he attempts to return it to an eager Wigan player.

He is not new to this management lark is he?

Shane Long has done a brilliant spoiling job for Southampton.

He wins another free-kick in a tussle with Cheyenne Dunkley.

And another time-sapping sub from Southampton. Off goes Manolo Gabbiadini and on comes Oriel Romeu.

Max Power's pass beats his team-mate to the byeline. Goal-kick to Southampton.

Shane Long - all five foot not much of him - heads clear for Southampton.

The break is briefly on. But Long is canny. He wins a foul off Cheyenne Dunkley.

The Wigan defender is booked into the bargain.

Noel Hunt wins a late corner off Mario Lemina.

We are entering do-or-die time....

Ryan Colclough takes on Cedric Soares. No way through there for Wigan.

And then Nick Powell misplaces a pass, straight to Mario Lemina.

Wigan have improved in the last few minutes and getting joy down the left and right. They are starting to believe a little.
