That's probably the first mistake from Nathan Byrne all game. He just doesn't want to play it forward.

Where to start!?

Nathan Byrne - excellent so far - plays a brain-fade of a backpass straight to the feet of Manolo Gabbiadini.

The Southampton striker - with no defender within ten yards of him - controls, turns and pokes goalwards from near the penalty spot.

Goalkeeper Christian Walton - off his blocks like Bolt - saves brilliantly with an outstretched toe.

Walton has his back slapped red and Saints have their first corner of the game.

How scared were the Southampton players there? They kept reversing and let Gavin Massey pick the ball up and run 30 yards or so.

They look scared to death to tackle some players.

A decent crossing position for Gavin Massey. Not a bad shooting one as it turns out!

The Wigan midfielder sends a low shot zipping just wide from the right edge of the box.

I think goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has already set out in expectation of a cross.

Wigan won't be spooked. They have played Premier League sides before in this competition. They know they won't have the ball for long periods, just as long as they are not losing they will be fine.

A false dawn for Saints?

After a bright start to the second half, Wigan are banging on the door once more.

It is intriguing what Mark Hughes would have said to his players at half time, he knows they needed to improve.

They look a bit livelier in the second half, certainly more than they did in the last half hour of the first.

Southampton looking a little livelier.

Ryan Bertrand forces Nathan Bryne on to the back foot and Guido Carrillo is not far away from skidding ball into the box.

Damian: Based on that first 45 mins, Wigan are definitely good enough for the Championship, they deserve to be playing at that level. Same for Southampton.

David: If Mark Hughes didn't know the size of the task facing him, after that first half he does. Premier League footballers?

The BBC One crew are picking out Nathan Byrne's first-half performance. And they are bang right.

He has been excellent, leaving scorch marks up and down the Wigan right and using the ball intelligently when it comes to an end product.

Started his career at Tottenham, and it looks like he deserves to be closer to the level that Spurs are at.

Paul: Wow this Wigan side can really play...wouldnt be surprised to see them challenging for promotion to Premier League next year!!

All around Wigan fans stand up to applaud, and well they might . They have worked so hard in the this first half.

There are two divisions between these two, but if you came down today and didn’t know either side, would think Wigan are the top side. They wanted it more and played the better football. Ahead in every way except goals.

It's a very good game but Wigan might be edging it with energy. Southampton are giving it a go but Wigan just aren't letting them. Wigan have created some really good chances.

If this one was going to the judges scorecards it would be a landslide for the hosts.

The only thing missing from Wigan's game at the moment is a little bit of quality in front of goal.

We have seen a lot of Sam Morsy on the ball but he just needs to move it on a little bit quicker.

Southampton are gasping for half-time.

Gavin Massey's cushioned header looking for Will Grigg in the box is very nearly perfect, but the attentions of two Southampton defenders is just enough to put off the Latics striker.
