1. 'Too much of a mountain to climb'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

    Mark Lawrenson
Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 live

I’m nervous! I’m not even playing. I think Liverpool will get through. There may be a few bumps in the road as there always seems to be with them on these occasions but I am convinced they will score. There’s too much of a mountain to climb for Roma. Liverpool are in charge of their own destiny.

Flaxman in Brum: I'd say this Liverpool team have the potential to go much further than any Liverpool team of the past 30 years. They are not quite there yet - midfield still a little low on top quality, and this is where they need to spend or develop players for next season, without which they won't challenge for the league. However the back four have been improved by the purchase of VVD and the development of the young full-backs Robertson and Alexander-Arnold. Karius has been well managed this season too and looks like he will kick on. And as for the front free...best since Rush, Barnes, Beardsley?

Ash: Our front 3 is the strongest since the 90s. Our defence (minus our full-backs) was rock solid and our starting midfield was world-class under Rafa. Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard, anyone?

Keith, Frodsham: Liverpool have an excellent core of 15 players when all are fit but no depth in squad. Injuries to say Salah and Virgil tonight and you can forget Kiev.

Just the one change for Liverpool from the first leg as midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum replaces Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, who is out with a serious knee injury.

  5. How can Roma stop Liverpool front three?published at 18:36 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

I think when you play Liverpool you have to respect that front three. They like to play quite narrow; they don’t hog the touchline like Ribery or Robben do when they play for Bayern.

Sane, Salah and Firmino like to play on the width of the penalty box most of the time. The best way to play against them is with the protection of one or two midfielders in front of the back four and play narrow.

Stoke at the weekend did quite well, they played quite narrow. I was at Old Trafford when Salah, Firmino and Mane did not get a kick of the ball. Mourinho’s team played really narrow and that frustrated them.

Because they are not the sort of players who would like to stand on the touchline, they want to be inside and in the opposition’s box.

Sam, Durham: A top keeper, reliable CB and replacement for Can away from title fighters. The bench still looks light, though.

Helles Mammut: Why all this sudden praise for Liverpool? Yes, they can play well at Anfield but they needed dodgy offside decisions against City and the 3-0 in the first leg was offside as well... In away games they have been mediocre at best all season...

  10. 'Liverpool must think positively'published at 18:27 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

    Roma v Liverpool (19:45 BST)

    Roy Evans
Former Liverpool manager on Radio 5 live

You have to think very, very positively. You would have taken 5-2. To concede a couple of goals was disappointing but we have a three-goal lead and you'd expect us to score in the game. Hopefully it will be enough.

Liverpool play with a high press anyway. The big danger is if we try to defend. It's important that we play the way we have been playing. It's been very successful. If we can score a goal or more it should get us through.

  11. 'Liverpool’s starting 11 improved thanks to Klopp'published at 18:26 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

    Mark Lawrenson
Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 live

I think generally when you look at Liverpool’s starting 11 I would say the manager has improved every single player.

Is it not what you’re basically looking for in a manager? Someone who can make good players into very good players and, occasionally, very good players into world-class players, like Salah and maybe Firmino.

And secondly, generally during the course of this Champions League campaign, Klopp has always played his strongest team apart from when they were 5-0 up against Porto in the second leg.

So I think he has a real belief that he can actually win this competition.

Nils: This Liverpool side is definitely better than 2005 simply due to the fact that side had Djimi Traore in defence

  13. Liverpool's 'expensive risk' shows Roma what they could have hadpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

    European football writer

Sometimes you don't know what you've got until it's gone. Roma knew Salah was a top player when they sold him last summer.

But if the Giallorossi had known Salah was "Ballon d'Or worthy" as every Italian newspaper declared him to be following last week's display, then it's impossible not to feel a bit of seller's remorse.

Neymar was supposed to be the player primed to break Messi and Ronaldo's 10-year grip on that award. In Italy, Juventus' graceful playmaker Paulo Dybala was proclaimed Serie A's biggest hope and likeliest recipient of the prize. Not Salah.

Within the media and among fans, there is a sense of what might have been had Roma been able to tap into Salah's potential in the way Jurgen Klopp has over the last nine months.

Improvement was to be expected. Salah is still only 25 and, together with Klopp's style, the faster, looser, more anarchic Premier League seemed tailor-made for him. It was a good fit. You could project Salah would get better. But this much better?

I've just been thinking about how good this Liverpool team is.

Is this the best Reds team since 1990? How do they compare to the 2005 Champions League-winning side? Or is it a case of the best front three and a less remarkable defence and midfield?

Liverpool are the only team to score five or more goals in four games in a single Champions League season.

The Reds will be without five first-team players for the second leg after midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain suffered a season-ending knee injury in their victory at Anfield.

Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Joel Matip are also unavailable but left-back Alberto Moreno could return.

Roma forward Diego Perotti (ankle) and midfielder Kevin Strootman (knock) are ruled out.

  18. 'Liverpool will learn from Barca lesson'published at 18:10 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

Roma v Liverpool (19:45 BST, 2-5 first leg)

    Raphael Honigstein
European football journalist on BBC Radio 5 live's Euro Leagues Football Show

Barcelona did Liverpool a favour by showing what can happen if you approach the game with the wrong mentality in the wrong spirit. I don't think Liverpool will make the same mistake.

They'll realise their best way to succeed is just to play their own game and try to draw Roma forward before hitting them on the break - and not just sleepwalking to a 3-0 defeat like Barcelona did.

I don't see it happening twice.

You'd have seen one thing Liverpool don't like is to play against deep teams who play on the break. I'm not saying Roma should play like Stoke did at the weekend but at least adjust a bit to keep yourself in the tie.

This Liverpool team were so happy to see that approach. It was very surprising to see an Italian manager fall into that trap - maybe a bit of inexperience at this level thinking 'we stick to what we do and the other team have to adjust'.

  20. Can lightning strike twice?published at 18:05 British Summer Time 2 May 2018

Roma will take a huge amount of credit from the quarter-finals when they came into the second leg needing a similar result against Barcelona - and got it.

They had lost 4-1 in the Nou Camp but won 3-0 at home to progress on away goals.

That was seen as a miracle - just miles away from the Vatican City - but can they achieve a second miracle in a month?

Do that again tonight, and they're in their first final since 1984 when they lost to Liverpool.
