Speaking to BT Sport, Arsene Wenger said: "Looking at the performance and the way the game went, it was the worst possible result for us, but we have to go there in a positive mood and qualify.

"Unfortunately we gave a goal away from nowhere but now we need to recover from the disappointment and prepare for the next game.

"Of course it feels like an opportunity missed. We could have qualified tonight but it didn't happen. Their keeper made a lot of saves and they showed their quality by scoring with one chance. But they couldn't score with a combination, they could only do it with a long ball, so we have to look at ourselves."

Asked about Atletico's impressive home record, Wenger said: "You don't look at the statistics, you can only look at your own performance and we know we can score from anywhere. What matters is that we go there with the belief to do it.

Philip James: One long ball and we concede. How many times has that happened in the last few years. New regime can’t come soon enough.

Paul Dalton: Arsenal's defence was under next to no pressure for nearly the whole game but made a mess of the one situation they had to deal with. Realistically what chance have they got next week when they will have to defend for long periods?

  4. 'Maybe I want it the most'published at 22:25 British Summer Time 26 April 2018

Speaking to BT Sport, Alexandre Lacazette said: "It was a great goal to score after the ball from Jack (Wilshere) and I'm happy to do my job."

Asked about the prospect of playing the final in his hometown of Lyon, he said: "I really want to play in the final, maybe I'm the player who wants it the most in the team, but we have to work hard to achieve that."

  5. 'An opportunity lost'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 26 April 2018

Arsene Wenger describes it as an "opportunity lost" and says Arsenal could have qualified for the final tonight due to the number of chances his side created.

"We gave a goal away from nowhere," he adds.

    Arsenal

Speaking to BT Sport, Danny Welbeck said: "It's disappointing to concede a goal at the end after taking the lead. We will do our own analysis on their goal and make sure it doesn't happen again.

"This game is done now and there were opportunities for us to score more against a good side, so we have to be positive going into the second leg.

"It's a semi-final - we wanted to win before the manager announced he was leaving and we wanted to win it after. We are professionals but seeing him lift the trophy would be the icing on the cake."

Dave: If ever there was a match which showed the results of Arsenal's gradual decline over the last few years, that was it.

Lillian: Arsene Wenger will be heartbroken, his last chance to win a trophy or to take Arsenal to another year in Europe and he blew it

It's a great shame and it shouldn't have ended this way but it was top quality European football.

There is still hope because the game is only level, and Arsenal do have dangerous players, but everyone in the stadium senses that the opportunity has been missed.

They might pay for three seconds where they couldn't shut the door. Laurent Koscielny has had to be the rock for Arsenal over the years but when they needed him to be at his best, he has allowed someone to tip-toe past him and put the ball in the net.

Ultimately I don't think it will be enough for Arsenal.

How is Arsene Wenger going to dress this one up?

The tie isn't over, of course, and there is another big 90 minutes to come in Spain's capital next Thursday.

But this was a huge opportunity missed by the Gunners to kill off Atletico.

    Incredible.

How have they allowed Antoine Griezmann to sneak in behind and end up toeing it into the roof of the net at the second time of asking?

He has hardly had a kick. Arsenal lost possession high up the field and that defence just got caught out. Laurent Koscielny is brushed off the ball far too easily.

Arsenal really should have been coasting through this game and looking for the second goal of the game themselves.

No wonder it has gone quiet inside the Emirates.
