Arsenal boss Arsenal Wenger, asked by BT Sport if he still gets nervous on nights like this: "Unfortunately, yes. I am very positive and believe in the team. I have a certainty that we will give everything in the tie tonight.

"We have to take the game to them. They will try to get us on the break. The only way to score is to play with the handbrake off.

"It is not the best moment to explain the why of a decision [selecting Danny Welbeck over Henrikh Mkhitaryan]. We need strikers tonight and I believe everybody will have a part to play.

"We know him [Diego Costa] from England. He is an important striker. It is up to us to defend together."

Rezaa: I feel for our defence. Mavropanos should be partnering Koscielny. He handled Lukaku who's physically similar to Diego Costa.

RM: Should have played the majority that started versus United. Way more threat and those players actually had desire.

J Staggs: I've been an Arsenal fan since the bad old days of George Graham so I know what a great job Arsene Wenger has done, but he really deserves to go out on a high.

While Arsene Wenger may yet be sat in the dugout for the last time as Arsenal boss on a European night, Atletico Madrid counterpart Diego Simeone will have to watch this game from the stands.

Simeone was dismissed from the dugout during last week's eventful first leg.

"I'm sad about the situation and the suspension," said the Argentine.

"I will have to improve and I'd best not say anything else. It is not going to change the way I coach the team."

It has been 22 years with a lot of highs and lows along the way. To boil it all down to a difficult semi-final second leg at Atletico Madrid is probably underplaying the depth of the love story. I think that love will always burn for Arsene Wenger. In time, when some of the more complicated emotions of Arsenal fans over the last few years start to wane, it will be felt the other way as well. He is indelible in terms of the history of the club.

Nick: It the most important game of our season. Lose this and there’s nothing to play for. Top four is mathematically impossible.

Lewis: If Arsenal win today, I really can’t see Wenger handing over the reigns to a team that will be in the Champions League next season. Maybe a stipulation for a contract extension?

We're not sure that's how it works Lewis...

  11. 'Fascinating game ahead'published at 19:17 British Summer Time 3 May 2018

Atletico Madrid v Arsenal (20:05 BST)

    Julien Laurens
French football expert on BBC Radio 5 live

There were so many things wrong with that Antoine Griezmann goal at the end of the game at the Emirates, it's almost laughable.

Arsenal had so much control and enjoyed so much possession because they were playing against 10 men for most of the game. But to concede in the way they did...that will probably knock them out.

That game was so much like Arsenal's season, but of course they can still go there and do it. This Atletico team is not that impressive but they only need a 0-0 draw. It's going to be a fascinating game. We saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan in good form at the weekend and they will go there believing they can go through.

Arsenal got themselves into a great position and could have beaten the opposition by an even bigger margin than 1-0, so I think it's a big opportunity missed.

Atletico do not give a lot of chances away and I think, for once, the mental blow from that first leg will be a tough one to overcome.

The question at the back of the players' minds will be 'why aren't we coming here with a 1-0 lead?' If they go out in Madrid the blame will be on the first leg result.
