    Brighton 0-0 Man Utd

David de Gea is called into action for the first time.

Brighton's player of the year Pascal Gross drills low and hard, but pretty central, from 20 yards.

The Manchester United goalkeeper eats those for breakfast.

But this is not going as Jose Mourinho would have wanted. Chris Smalling was tugging at Jose Izquierdo's shirt like a tantruming toddler as the winger set up his Seagulls team-mate.

    Brighton 0-0 Man Utd

Anthony Knockaert looks in the mood.

Brighton's twinkle-toed Frenchman teases a couple of the United defenders with some staccato control before slipping a neat ball into the path of Jose Izquierdo.

    His shot is blocked.

But this is a promising start for the hosts.

Glenn Murray attempts to twist off the shoulder of Chris Smalling and into the pocket of space behind the Manchester United defender.

The pair fall in a tangled heap. But it is six of one half a dozen of the other. Nothing doing from referee Craig Pawson.

But Brighton are building up a head of steam. Dale Stephens slaps a 20-yard shot a couple of yards wide off his instep.

    Brighton 0-0 Man Utd

Marouane Fellaini stretches out one of those telescopic legs and turns home Marcus Rashford's pinged ball into the Brighton box.

But the Belgian - out of contract at the end of the season - is denied another bit of negotiation leverage as the flag pops up on the far side.

He was a couple of yards too eager.

Marouane Fellaini gives Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea a skidding, scudding backpass to deal with. The Spaniard takes due care and controls sharply as Glenn Murray sniffs around for the loose ball.

Now then, Marcus Rashford is hacked down on the edge of the box, off to the left hand side, he is going to take it...

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho speaking to Sky Sports: "We want to win. Alexis and Lukaku are injured and not an option, but we believe in these players - in many cases they are fresher and we are playing against a team that is strong at home and intense. The FA Cup final is not tomorrow so there is no energy to save. We need four points to finish second."

Some Manchester United fans have demanded more this season but there is the prospect of Jose Mourinho's men finishing on 86 points.

That would be just three points shy of the total that won them their last title under Sir Alex Ferguson five years ago.

With an FA Cup Final to come too, it's hard to argue there hasn't been progress. It's just not happening as quickly as some may like.

Brighton manager Chris Hughton speaking to Sky Sports: "We know the magnitude of what we are up against. We will need to be at our best and they will need to be a little off their game. It is daunting, challenging but exciting, it is something that we have worked hard for for many years."

With Eric Bailly is on the bench for Manchester United tonight, making it nearly a month since he last played for the club - in the win away over Manchester City on 7 April.

The 24-year-old is fit but is apparently paying for Jose Mourinho's determination to give his other central defenders maximum opportunity to stake their claim for a World Cup spot in the respective national teams.

Bailly's Ivory Coast failed to qualify.

“There is no situation, Eric is fine,” he said.

“I try to be a good team manager and that means being a little bit cold and selfish at times, but I am not as bad as all that and I still have space for a little bit of feeling.

"If I have to make an emotional choice then Eric is the one I am not going to help. The other four [Smalling, Lindelof, Jones and Rojo] are all fighting for a place.”

It makes you all warm and fuzzy inside doesn't it?

On Romelu Lukaku's absence: "We work hard as a team and are flexible in what we can do."

Chris Hughton's only competitive win as a manager against Manchester United came in November 2012 when his Norwich City side triumphed 1-0 at home at Carrow Road.

His post-match interview included lots of talk about whether goalkeeper John Ruddy - now on his way back to the Premier League with Wolves - could become England number one.

Hughton's other encounters against Manchester United have gone less well.

In another six competitive fixtures against United, he has lost by an aggregate score of 15-0.

Swansea play Southampton in the definition of a relegation six-pointer that day.

Something has to give. It's not possible for both sides to take three points and therefore Brighton doing so tonight does enough to book themselves into the Premier League paddock for another season.

A lot has been made of relegation rivals Huddersfield's tough run-in with the Terriers taking on, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal in their final three games.

Brighton's final trifecta looks even harder on the slip.

After tonight's home meeting with Manchester United, they head away to Manchester City and Liverpool.

Asked whether tonight might be the Seagulls best chance of adding to their 37 points, striker Glenn Murray told the Brighton Argus:, external “Yes, that is the way we see it.

“But football doesn’t always pan out the way you see it, does it?"
